To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

As the title says.
Looking for a good base antenna for my hunting cabin. There is very minimal audio traffic or rf interference. There is no cell service, electricity or gmrs repeater traffic. What would be a good antenna option? The antenna would only be used for gmrs and it will be in a mountainous environment. I was looking at one of the fiberglass tram. But I wanted to ask others what they have been successful with
Thanks

I just use the Laird NMO magnet mount GB8UM and Laird QW450 6" antenna on a metal bracket screwed to the top of a cedar fence. Tessco SKU's 2096294/2096293.

This is connected to either a Motorola CDM1550LS+ or XPR5550e depending on property I am at.

I would go with a comet offering. Antennas will degrade due to weather. The comet antennas will probably give you a decade or more of service. Laird is also a good antenna. I'm confident that you won't get that from Tram. Same for the coax, don't buy on price. I use Times Microwave LMR-400 for all of my ham antennas.

You'll never go wrong by getting the antenna above the cabin, even if its just 10 or 20 feet. A durable mast or pipe anchored to the side of the cabin and sunk in concrete with do the trick any day. Height, good coax, lightning protection, and a quality antenna are always your best investments. The last thing you want is to arrive at your cabin to find an antenna system that isn't working properly or was damaged by the elements, leaving your communications system dead in the water.

All good options presented above & worth considering. The COMET antenna is not inexpensive plus its size makes it very noticeable, perhaps attracting attention you don’t want. I’d suggest checking out the GMRS antenna from Ed Fong for lower visibility while still having good performance when mounted like W8UU recommended with good quality coaxial cable.

Bigger antenna = longer range. I have a cabin in the forest and I cammo paint the antennas to blend in.
