Hello, I recently purchased a sds 100 Uniden scanner, and I’m trying to listen to Huron county p25 trunk and Lorain county 5 city. I also have the 920s antenna as I heard a lot of good reviews for. My question is I pick up the Marcs trunking system but the Huron county and Lorain county I don’t receive if I do it’s only once in awhile. I live about. 28 miles from the 5 city tower and 15 miles from the Norwalk p25 tower. Any help would be appreciated

Your a bit out of range for the 5-City coverage... Maybe with a rooftop ant...

And looks like your on the ragged edge for Huron County P25 coverage...

Huron County P25's Law Enforcement is showing Encrypted...Except for Bellevue...

Location is everything. Are there any tall structures between you and the target area, that could
help block the signal? How is the elevation? We are talking about 700/800 MHz here, 28 miles is
an awfully long haul for 800 MHz. MARCS is a statewide system with broad coverage. Smaller area systems
such as Huron County and Lorain City are not designed for their signals to travel much beyond their intended area.

If you click on the sites it will show you the average range from center of the system. In this case Huron is 16.1 miles and
the Lorain 5-City system is 18.23. Despite using the Remtronix 920S (I also have one), you are on the far edge of those
systems. I can think of a couple of things to try

1. Since you are using a handheld, you can move about your QTH and find the "sweet" spot for best reception.
2. Get a Yagi antenna that you can point toward the exact system tower you want to receive. Of course this
will probably limit you to receiving one system at a time.

Beyond that, without moving closer to them, that's all you can do.

Gotcha so the local systems are harder to hear due to them only really being a local system with local signals. I can pick up Ottawa county due to that being close I’m in Sandusky . Also I’ve noticed I do get the Lorain police on the standard receiver without it being trunked which I find weird but. With radio reference premium is it worth it?

The other issue with the Lorain Co. system is it's Phase 2. Being TDMA, it will have a limit on far you can hear it vs. regular digital.
Because of the time-slot timing, the further from the system you get, the more propagation delay becomes an issue, and after a certain point, your receiver won't be able to maintain sync with the time slots. You'll see the same problem with DMR, or any TDMA-based RF communications. You get too far away and your receiver will lost sync.

I'm in southern Lorain county west of Litchfield. I took a shot in the dark and bought a DMS 700mhx yagi antenna with 14dBi gain a few years ago and have installed in my attic. I'm aimed at the Cleveland Justice Center 30 miles away. It took a little bit to find the the direction. I listen to the Cuyahoga site 002-001 with no issues and it handles a lot of traffic. I bought a second one and a rotor which is in the attic and on some nights I have pulled in Toledo. Location and elevation is the key. I have a hard time with the Castalia site 002-005.
Good luck!

Gotcha I just picked up a diamond SRH789 antenna and it’s been a joy to use I used the remtronix 920s and I’ve been picking up the Lorain county trunk here and there and the conventional channels with this antenna. But I’ll have to try it sometime!
