If someone has knowledge or experience of the Interstate 5 (I-5) CHP frequencies used by the CHP between SR 152 (Los Banos) and US 58 (Buttonwillow-Bakersfield), I would appreciate some help. I’ve listed below what I normally monitored; but I’ve found many times the CHP must be using different freqs than these because I never hear the routine traffic after a CHP unit has stopped someone along I-5. Most of the CHP traffic can be heard using the standard 42.XXX CHP frequency series. But there are times as I just mentioned that you don’t hear the traffic along this section of I-5.

My monitoring sequence along I-5:
I’ assume that you should monitor 42.600 (Buttonwillow-Bakersfield coverage area) from Buttonwillow north to around Kettleman City on I-5. This is based upon my assumption that 42.500 (Bakersfield freq) applies to Bakersfield along US 99, not I-5.

From Kettleman to Los Banos, I usually monitor 42.880 (Los Banos area) and/or 42.440 (Coalinga area).

If there are other frequencies being used by the CHP along this section of I-5 that someone has good knowledge of, I would appreciate any help.

CHP I-5

You have the correct frqs.: 42.60R Buttonwillow, 42.44B/42.76M for Kings County & Fresno County, and 42.88B/42.66M for Merced County. I listen to Blue 42.34B/42.18M also; at times during daylight hours you will hear aircraft working speed details with the ground units. I've not heard the reported channel of Ivory 45.02 used for this in over 20 years. If you monitor 154.905, the extender repeater channel, you will know you are near a CHP unit on a stop if you hear activity on it. If you have a CB radio monitor channel 15 south of S/R 46 and channel 17 north of S/R 46 for Smokey reports, and/or you can even talk to the chippies on the ground and in the air.
