Quite by chance I stumbled over a solution for an annoying feature in the Pro97 that has beguiled me for years. This problem is not addressed in the users manual so I hope I'm not about to find out that I'm the only idiot in the forum who doesn't know this.

For years I've thought the only way to put a talkgroup in hold mode is to wait for it to go active then press PSE or T. Well, I just accidentally I figured out how to do it manually:

1. While the scanner is scanning the trunked system you want to monitor, press PGM and T. This should put the scanner in program mode

2. Use your arrow keys to select the talkgroup you want to monitor

3. Press F and T.

The next thing you should see is **ID Hold mode** and your talkgroup.

Did this help anyone?

I've always wondered how to do that, especially for trunked systems that have numerous TG's. Awesome info, thanks!

Now if they just allowed you to press "up" and "down" to switch talkgroups, it'd kick butt. In this single regard, the Unidens are much easier to use on trunked systems.

Apparently it was secret enough to leave out of the owner's manual. And since there is not much intuitive logic behind the operation of the 97, some of us apparently weren't evolved enough to stumble across it ourselves. As to your question, Mancow, I'm not sure I'm capable of reaching a lofty enough plane to help you rationalize the diminutive nature of our beleaguered evolution into your bipedal world.

Perhaps you can help me figure out how to make my 95 do the same thing?

No...no...you got me all wrong. I appreciated the talk group tip and I agree that the GRE units are hard to program since there are no menus. Your tip did help me out. Heck, I can't even remember how to edit the text on my 96s talk groups right now without referring to the manual or using WIN 96.

I was referring to the comments that people were posting that said "that's all I can and will say" when they were referring to other units. That's what I was talking about. It sounded like there was something else to be known that was a big secret.

I was curious what that was all about.

I didn't mean to offend and come off that way. It was a poor choice of words on my part.

Sorry. I was just being facetious. I have no clue if the key sequence works on other models or not. I just thought that since PB had taken a beating on another thread for his "that's all I will and can say" comment, I'd throw one out in this thread, too.

PB doesn't know me I don't think. But my favorite PB phrase has to be "weather, please."

:)

Now I feel bad. I tried to add a smiley face to my response, but I can't seem to get those things to work on my Mac (which is superior in every way except when it comes to adding smiley faces). Although I DID misunderstand your response, I think my masculinity was threatened by your 1000 + posts. I responded poorly and am now ashamed.

I think I also got a little excited about an opportunity to use the word "bipedal." That doesn't come along everyday.

Can we be friends again?

PB makes such an easy target because he never realizes he's being targeted.

I'm surprised this was omitted in the Pro-97 OM. The 96 OM has it listed in the talkgroup ID hold topic prior to turning an ID sub-bank on or off. BTW, the wording in both manuals are nearly identical but one paragraph (this subject) is omitted in the 97 OM.

Edit: BTW Chaos, nice research...you've rewritten the 97/2055 OM.

Yea!!! I can't wait to tell my wife that my hobby DOES serve the greater good!

The slip up probably came from Radio Shack outsourcing the graphic design of their manuals to India.
