Just got home with it. I bought everything with this scanner, the 800MHZ antenna, the rechargeable batteries and the AC adaptor. I had to go to two stores because the first one had one in the box but it was obviously a return and was scratched and missing the belt clip.

Now to go in seach of good things to program the scanner up with! I did try to join the Yahoo Pro-96 group and I never heard anything from them, they said they require an admin approval to join. Any other good groups out there to try and get some win96 downloads?

Thanks all!

you are at the best place for downloads. I hope you also bought the cable so that you can program with your computer. Go to www.starrsoft.com and download the WIN96 program and you can use it for free for 30 days. The site also has information on the correct cable.

Once you buy the cable and pay for WIN96 you can even download from this site directly into your scanner. Check the database on this site and you will find a lot of frequencices and talk groups.

Yes I do have the cable already from my Pro-97 and I downloaded the software.

As for the database on this site, what is the easiest way to get the codes that I want into my scanner? Just type them into the win96 program then upload to scanner?

I just bought one too - about 3 weeks ago.

You know, I bought a BCD396T when they first came out last summer and I really like it.

But the PRO-96 blows it away in several areas.

1. We just had some severe weather here in GA. The SAME WX standby mode on the PRO-96 is MUCH EASIER to use. FUNC+WX and you're in standby mode! With the BCD396T there's more programing involved - it's not hard but I hadn't pre-programmed it and when the high winds and hail hit I really didn't want to figure it out. The severe weather alert woke me up (in this case Severe Thunderstorm Warning) and I was able to prevent damage to the stuff in my yard. Excellent!

2. I find the PRO-96 easier to program overall - with and without software. Win96 is an EXCELLENT program. Programing the PRo-96 is just intuitive.... the 396D has menu after menu to surf through and, although BCD396TSS is probably the best Uniden Software yet (and free) it still has a few annoying quirks about it. For instance....you can add systems to the radio without erasing the entire memory but you can't change them. You can add a duplicate...but you have to erase the old system manually.

3. The PRO-96's audio is much better - even with the latest firmware upgrades the 396T just doesn't measure up here. AGC and volume range are just better on the PRO-96.

4. I LOVE V-Scanner! Yes, you can put LOTS of systems in the BCD396T but, with the PRO-96, you get a nice "package" for the area you're in.

5. Multi-site trunking works much better on the PRO-96. The main system I listen to is a wide-area SmartNet (Ft Stewart, GA) with several nodes. The 396T invariably locks on to the wrong node - not the closet or the strongest. I don't have this problem with the PRO-96. In fact, operation almost seems transparent. Just plug in all the control channels and forget about it.

6. I love the way the service searches work on the PRO-96 - especially the GMRS/FRS/MURS search. It just quick, easy and intuitive.

Enough raving. I love this radio. I'm glad I have both - because they each have strenghts that compliment the other - but I really enjoy using the PRO-96 a lot.

Congratulations on your aquisition. Good choice!

I did some programming on the new scanner tonight! I used some of what I have on my Pro-97, exported it to my Pro-96. I am now just going to use my Pro-97 to listen to Denver PD since they are huge and very active. I'm using my 96 for CSP and the surrounding cities to me which are also very active. I just wish the light on the 96 was as bright as the light on the 97. Other than that, I'm a happy camper! :p

Not to steal any of funcritter's thunder, I too just got a Pro-96.

These are great scanners. Just need a little help programming a couple things, and I'll be all set.

Congrats on the scanner! Do what I did and get win96. You can program your whole scanner using it and the database codes from this site here. If you need more help, some of the more experienced people here can help.
