Wait a minute here. You guys are flopping around like stepped on toads. Scannerman200 is having a problem receiving VHF UHF frequencies at his home with an outside antenna. What constitutes poor reception? Maybe what he wants is around the bend and over the hill, and this would indeed require an antenna with lower losses and good connectors. But lets get some comparasions here. If an antenna is connected to the back of the scanner, can he hear the stations he wants to listen to? And if so, is connecting the roof mount antenna better, worst, or the same? Granted RG-58 is the least lovable coax to use, but at VHF UHF, I would think there would be somewhat of an improvement with an antenna outside on the roof. If it is the same or worst, I would be looking at connector problems or something. If the cable is OK and all connections are good, Then I would be looking at maybe some more height, better coax, etc.
Also my two cents about mounting to a vent pipe. A small lightweight antenna is probably OK, but when you start strapping masts or mega station master types of antennas, the wind bend and vibration will wreck the seal (whatever it is) and it will leak like crazy....
