BCD396XT/BCD996XT: I SCREWED UP!

I was listening for over 3 hours and did not hear one call from Wichita Police,this is just not right when there should be 10-20 calls every 10 minutes!
The ONLY calls I was getting was Highway Patrol and they sounded good,on the advice of another member,I reset the scanner by holding 2,9 and hold keys and turned the scanner on..NOW,I can not load anything from FREESCAN!
Scanner screen reads "Scan Mode Nothing to Scan"
When I try to upload my stuff in Freescan I get "error port could not be opened" or Critical error possibly caused by insufficient scanner resources" OR Timeout error while upload.
Everything uploaded fine before!
My port on scanner is COM 4 and port on computer is COM 4 and FREESCAN port 4.
What happened?

It's always frightening to see this happen, but it is fixable.

"Nothing to Scan" usually means there are no quick keys enabled (turned on).

When you did the re-set, did you tell the scanner to load the pre-loaded systems?
If not there probably isn't anything in the scanner to scan. You might try the re-set again and say "Yes" to reloading, just to see if something will scan. That will be a relief to you, though eventually you'll want to delete them.

On the com port issue, that's happened to me before. I think a couple of software things were trying to capture/use the same port which created a conflict. I powered my computer down then re-stated it and the problem went away.

Hopefully you'll be able to re-load the stuff you saved in FreeScan after the re-start.

Screwed up

I'm not sure how you are finding a port number for your scanner, but if you think is is the port, the first thing to do is delete it in the device manager, restart the computer, and then reinstall the driver software. Plug in the cable, go to the device manager and see what port was assigned by the computer. Open the software and set it for the number shown in the device manager. Then connect the radio and send the data. Originally these radios used a RS232 cable, but the USB has become ore popular with newer computers. Your scanner does not have a port number, it just accepts data from the cable that comes from the computer.

Just took at quick look at your county. They appear to be using a simulcast system. Simulcast systems can be difficult to listen to depending upon your location.

Most often this manifests itself by either garbled audio or no audio even though you are getting full bars on the meter.

A lot has been posted elsewhere about simulcast distortion and things that can be done to help.

I did the reset again and its like it was out of the box..scanning Alaska.
Buy still will not exchange info between computer and scanner,when I hit upload,it sits there for about 2 minutes then error time out.
It worked fine before!

After you reset it did you go into settings and set up the serial port and baud rate in the scanner?

Uniden should be proud because this is the most frustrating piece of electronics I have ever dealt with and I have been messing with computers since 1993!
2 days of disappointment and frustration and paid $400 for both!
What a deal!

ok, the nothing to scan is a quick fix that many have had the same problem. Got in a hurry and didn;t have antyhing related to keys, so j ust set each group to a key and thats taken care of. I believe you have a usb only conputer so unplug from the computer and then plug imto a different p[ort, like you were uxing perhaps the font, now the back. Then in Freescan, scanner, control scanner, comport setuy, auto andf let the computer find the radio, if it says found such and such, you are communicating with the scanner. You should be good to go with upload to the scanner,

he has a 996 scanner, uses Freescan, Sentinal will not work.

First, you didn't need to hit reset--if you are receiving one TG then it is a programming issue or simulcast error issue.

Second, ditch freescan and use ARC (free trial will get you going)

Third, it's not the scanner's fault that you can't setup com ports. You didn't tell us what cable you're using--UBS vs Serial. Try setting com 3. If you have a USB cable, you need to set the com port under device manager for that cable--don't be confused if there are other things listed--find the cable and set it to an open port, then use that port in ARC.

Here's an ARC file you can upload and change to your liking.

I use ProScan and FreeScan, but not at the same time because they both want the same port? When I want to use FreeScan to update my 996xt, I have to hit the "X" and turn off the ProScan! After I'm done with FreeScan I turn ProScan back on to see my logging data and all is good! Thanks
Anytime you do the 2, 9 procedure it will clear your channel list and it will require Free scan to put back into the radio! Check your "Virtual Control" setting and click the TAB "COM PORT SETUP" and play with that (Set Port to #3) and make sure the speed is set to 115200! Thanks

Appreciate you guys down there in Derby but my scanner is program just fine now,the issue is that I can not receive SIMULCAST very well in Park City,I drove around Wichita with the scanner and it works GREAT on simulcast but as soon as I get north of town to Park City I start to lose it,breaks up,garbled signal or no signal,everything thats NOT on simulcast works fine in Park City( highway patrol,butler county,ect.)
