Anyone out here with the R10? How do you like its performance on the VHF/UHF aircraft bands? Does anyone else find the AM volume a little on the low side? Lots of birdies in the UHF aero band?

I bought an R10 to use on a trip to Newfoundland last month. I went through six airports, so I had a lot of time to listen. The VHF aviation band reception was absolutely horrible. I could be in sitting in the terminal, and barely hear the tower or ATIS. Even at small airports, like Gander and Halifax, where I could see the tower, the reception was horrible. The UHF reception was slightly better. I used an earphone most of the time, so the volume was OK to me.

I am thinking that it may be due to the antenna that comes with the unit. I am going to try it with a 118-136MHz antenna and see if it works any better.

On a side note, the HF reception wasn't too bad. I used a little 24' roll-up dipole that I made, and it seemed to work well. I could hear New York, Shanwick (Ireland), and Gander HF stations very well from my location about 20 miles south of Gander.

Overall, if you are looking for a radio just for aviation band stuff, then you may want to look elsewhere. I'll reserve any definitive judgment until I can test the unit with a VHF antenna.

yes it is

The am reception is low with the antenna that comes with this radio. Getting a longer antenna will improve the performance. Radio Shack sells one that will work quit well. Thats is what did to make mine work.

Icom radios - low volume

I bought the Icom-10 for airshows and am very disappointed. Forget the search function. You better know exactly what frequency to look for or you'll probably miss it. I will try a longer antenna though. I was worried that it was my radio only.

Definitely...after a couple of years, now I wouldn't part with my R10 if someone held me at gunpoint

Try the AL-500 from Maldol...works like a charm
