Go with the T81A instead. As used radios go there about the same price(on ebay) and the 81 is a much better radio.

But get the software to program it with cause without it its a pita to program by keypad.

I like mine. But then, I have not owned the 81, so I don't know. I partially unscrew the antenna end adapter and connect a length of wire and get great SW reception...I like Broadcast SW, such as WBCQ, WWCR, etc.

A drawback is no SSB. I hear the VXR7 has SSB.

I have RR, Police, local ham repeaters and such entered in and it scans OK. Not a rocket speed demon, but it works for me. If you load all 500 channels, I imagine it would seem quite slow, but for the 20 or 30 channels I have in it, like I say, it works for me.

I use it for our 2 meter net on Wednesdays with an adapter going to a discone 30 feet up, and it works well. One night the adapter was not working properly, so I tried it with the "rubber duck" supplied with the radio, and to my surprise, they could copy me on the repeater, which is over 25 miles away, and my room has a metal roof on it.

Would I buy it again. Probably, but I would check out a HT that picked up SSB first just to see. Am I disappointed I own it? Not at all.

If you are going to load it up with hundreds of channels, the software is probably a good idea. I have it, but have not used it. Again, as I said, I don't have it packed with all that many channels. There are scanners out there to do that. But to have a little bit of everything and be able to transmit on 3 bands, this is a good radio.

my nickel's worth,
