If I remember correctly, Icom released four receivers at about the same time to replace the PCR1000. They were the R1500, PCR1500, R2500 and the PCR2500. They are are all directly related to each other and all four use the same firmware. The last firmware for all of these was released 2007/06/11. The R models have a control head. The PCR models do not have a control head. The 2500s have dual receivers and the 1500s have a single one. The 2500s can take both a D-Star and a P25 expansion board (The Japan Domestic model can not take the P25 board). I don't believe that the 1500s can use either one. I could be wrong, but I think the 1500s and the 2500s can both use an optional noise reduction module (DSP). The PCR models were discontinued about three years ago, but the R models were still offered. It appears that the 1500s have been discontinued but the R2500s are still available.

Disclaimer: I don't own any of these, but I would like to own the R2500 if funding allowed.

An important point here - the 2500 cannot do P25 trunking (without external software, which is available). The P25 module works on conventional frequencies only

and the P25 is a misconception, as I do have the 2500 and have been monitoring P25 with no problem with one exception it wont receive or decode encrypted conversations (but then no scanner can do that on its own). I absolutely love this unit and put it to test everyday
