I'm considering buying a used Icom IC-738 HF transceiver, to use as a receiver. I think most of the transceivers that have wide-band receivers, are as good, if not better, than dedicated receivers. If I ever get off my butt, and get my license, then I'll already have the transceiver. What do you guys think of this?

Thanks!

Hey, I used my Icom 746 for an ARINC receiver before I put it in storage, same thing with my Alinco DX70...I could listen to HF aircraft in the car. Go for it!

Yeah you're right on target Bill. Pretty much any ham hf rig will serve nicely as a general purpose hf receiver. Go for it and enjoy! For all-band listening an all-band antenna such as a big loop cut for say 80meters would make a terriffic antenna. That is what I use.

Not to metion that there seems to be more transceivers on the market than receivers.

I use a Yaesu FT-920, I use it on the HAM Bands plus listen to all kinds of SWL, works fine for me.

Funny you should say that. Considering a TenTec RX350 costs 1199, and you can get your hands on an Icom 703 rig for a little more than half the price, plus have a QRP transceiver if you get a license, I say go for the transceiver. Right now, my IC 746 is feeding 6577 CAR A HF to liveatc.net. I can use the twin passband tuning and the DSP noise reduction. Not to mention the 746 can hold three filters.
