This is a ham radio which transmits and receives in the 2-meter and 70-centimeter bands. It does have scanning abilities, but is designed primarily for ham radio use. In the U.S., you would need a Technician license (or higher) to legally transmit with this radio.

I think that this is a great little radio. I programmed it with RT Systems software and use it on vacation and business trips since it is so small. works great on 2- AA batts. Only transmitts about 375 mw, but if a repeater is close by it works fine. the RX is very good in my opinion. I use an ear plug quite a bit via the special ICOM splitter cable mad for this radio.

I bought mine when it first came out but they go up for sale on eBay and some good prices. The RX with its wideband capability plus 200 memories in a VERY SMALL package makes this attractive to me.
