I've been searching for a 12 volt power cord for my Icom IC-R75 without any luck. So I decided to make one but I don't know which connector I need. I have several power supplies’ with the correct style of connector but the wrong size. Why there are so many different connectors I don't have a clue. I've been to Radio Shack and they didn't have one either. I would like to find a correct power supply for my R75 that wasn't working and I could just cut the cord off of it. Any ideas or suggestions?

Icom does not have a power cord for the R75.

Hi you should be able to buy it direct from Icom or they can order it for you spare parts department.Im in australia and bought mine direct from Icom..

Regards Lino..

I've contacted a place in Australia at least 3 times that claim they sell the correct power cord but I never can get them to answer me back.

Radio Shack type Q is an adapter. http://rsk.imageg.net/graphics/product_images/pRS1-6637531w345.jpg

Looks like you are going to have to experiment, shortride! Did the original PS crap out on you, or did you buy a unit without a PS?

The original power supply works fine. I just wanted a 12 volt power cord so that I can run the Icom IC-R75 on my new MFJ 75 amp power supply along with everything else I have connected to it. So far it's looking like Icom may have used a unique connector.

Thanks for the input.

Oh! In that case, I am VERY interested in the outcome, because I would like to do the same thing as you. I didn't think of it until you just mentioned it! It's a good idea as a way to reduce desk clutter (thanks!).

I will be searching around as well, and I'll let you know if I come up with anything.

Do you still have the mobile power chord to the r75 laying around? If so, you can do your original idea by fabbing the connector from that to a decent spare line (of course you'd lose mobile ability if you wanted it) just another angle:)

The mobile 12 volt power cord didn't come with my R75 receiver. It's an optional item and is no longer available. I did find out what size it is though. It's a 6.3 x 3.0 mm connector.

This is a link to Elliott Electronic Supply that has the correct connector. http://www.elliottelectronicsupply.com/connectors/dc-plugs-jacks/3-0mm-x-6-3mm-dc-coaxial-plug.html

Here is a similar thread:

http://forums.radioreference.com/icom-receivers/224143-icom-r75-dc-fused-power-cable-question.html

There does not appear to be many options, except roll your own.

Before I would consider cutting the end off of my R75 power supply, I think I would consider cutting the connector of one of these:

AC Adapter for Icom IC R8500 IC R75 Receiver Scanner DC Power Supply Cord Mains | eBay

It would be a cheaper way to go, and without ruining the included adapter.

Seems like there would be a market for someone to duplicate the discontinued Icom DC cable.

It's not exactly what I had in mind but I got it done. Got the solder type connector today and made my own power cable for the R75. It works and I guess that's all that counts.

It's always a good feeling when someone solves a radio problem here on RR because of the input of others!

Radio Shack parts

Although Radio Shack does indeed sell the appropriately sized type "Q" connector for your Icom receiver, it can get expensive when you consider you also have to buy the appropriate power cord to go with it, as the connector has a special two-prong connection that mates with the power cord you must also purchase along with it.

Radio Shack used to sell a simple solder type "Q" connector and that's all you had to buy. Then you would solder your own power cable to it of the appropriate size. Most people have lots of power cables of varying sizes laying around that can be used for this purpose. I for one am always cutting off and saving old power cords from non working wall-wart power supplies in the event I can use either the connector or cable at another time for something else. Unfortunately, The Shack makes you buy unnecessary crap when all most people really need is just one simple little connector and nothing more

Radio Shack also used to sell a replacement 3.5mm mono speaker cable to replace old speaker cables that were either cut off of maybe the outer insulator started falling apart. You used to be able to go to The Shack and buy an inexpensive replacement "pigtail" that had an attached mono 3.5mm connector on it. Now you have to buy a separate 3.5mm connector and an entire roll of wire and spend five times the amount of money than you did when they simply carried an inexpensive direct part replacement in years past.

I like Radio Shack for certain things but it's clear they've restructured their parts section to force people into paying far more than you really need to for even simple replacement components

I have soldered wires directly to the adaptaplug many times and then covered in stepped layers of heat shrink tubing and they come out nice and it is a 90 connection that I usually want anyway. Some of the old 12v portable tv power cords make a match for the ICOM R75 dc jack also.
