• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Power on issues Q5N2

The Q5N2 I have had in my mobile for the past 2 1/2 years has developed an issue. Basically, sometimes it will come on when I turn it on and other times I have to turn it on and off many times before it will come on. Once it’s on, it works great.

I have it hooked up to my base now. I’ve tried leaving the switch on and cutting the power supply and then turning the power supply back on. Same problem. For grins I’ve changed out power cords also. I’ve opened it up just to see if there was anything obvious. Also have made sure all the screws on the board were tight while I was in there. This Radio has been subjected to some extreme temperatures the past two years in my car. Not the only Radio I have so my other N2 is in my mobile now. Thought maybe by chance someone else has run into this issue and might know a simple fix. Any ideas? Welcome and appreciated!!

I didn’t see anything on a quick search (which you also probably tried).

I leave any radio gear out of the sun (covered) here in Texas (160F summer interior temps). The combo of both ambient heat and direct sunlight is bad mojo.

Sure do. See here: AT6666 vs QT80 vs ?

I had to wire in a new power switch. I’m about to leave for the next day or 2, but when i get back i can take a picture of where to connect your new switch (or bridge the pins to always be on) on the front face circuit board if need be.

to properly fix that

get a brown paper bag
3 white chicken feathers
the left rear leg of a spotted toad
the beak of a sparrow
the anus of a white mouse
grey moss from the southern side of eucalyptus tree
a hair from a Jehovah Witness
and one red granite rock ( about 2 ounces )
and one FCC rule booklet

place all the above into the paper bag
swing the bag over the Q5N2 while repeating Ohm Kally, Kally three times. then take the bag and the radio and place them in a camp fire with green phosphate powder at the stroke of midnight...... let burn until morning

if that doesn't fix it? then nothing will

If you take the bottom cover off and look directly behind the on/off/volume knob you’ll see 2 soldered connections sitting just above a row of 3. The 2 soldered connections are where you need to be. Either A) use a jumper wire to bridge those 2 together (radio will always be on), or B) drill a hole and mount an external toggle switch. If you are using it as a base station the easiest is to just bridge those 2 connections for always on. Then use your power supply to turn it on and off.

It’s hard to see in my attached image but the red/black wires are for my new on/off toggle switch. You wont see them when you open yours up. Hope this solves your on/off issue. Worked for me. Also don't mind the sloppy wiring/solder job. While i had it open i cleaned it up.

Thanks for taking the time to help me. I really appreciate it. I’m going to give it a try and see what happens. I assume you still control the volume from the original switch?

Yup no doubt. This is the kind of thread that will pop up in a search and who knows how many people it will help!!! Without having to read through 50 pages of straying off topic before one finds the answer. Sure glad I decided to ask!!!!

But most questions in Radio, remember, arise as a matter of trying to follow thru on one of its subjects. Asking the right question can be pretty hard when unfamiliar. Didn’t know these other questions existed previous to a long thread.

DC Ground versus RF Bond, as an example.
I start in one place . . and land in another.

The best threads I’ve read can seemingly go all over the place after awhile if I’m new. Some I’ve re-read several times over the years. I’m better off as a result. This is ahead of getting into antenna theory.

Mechanical problems are straightforward, luckily. On/Off, Is/Isn't. Not a subject covered at www.k0bg.com

That’s quite different from the, “Maybe/Maybe Not”, that the Install Bible tries to make sensible.

A reference work to consult is king. A long thread can uncover a contributor who helps further clear it up for me.

“Who knows how many it will help?”

That’s enough for me to stick out my neck. As I don’t believe I can actually re-pay the debt. I’ve too many instances where Mobile Radio has saved my bacon.

A base station where the expense of proper grounding is daunting, is another. Right Choices, Rightly Understood. “Some of my family is out on the road tonight in a bad thunderstorm.”

That won’t be a short thread, per se, if the question starting it is General.
