I noticed that Icom has a holiday special (well, started in October) of a free UT-122 P25 board with the purchase of a R2500. The ads seem to indicate that this is for blocked versions only. Does anyone know if the Canada resellers (Radio World or Durham) are offering the same promotion? Or is it only US resellers?

Thanks

I sent a message to Icom Canada asking if they are offering a similar promotion and never received a reply. I have not seen any Canadian dealer advertising this promo either.

ICOM IC-R2500 first impressions

Hi all,

Only had this US version for 1 week and so far very impressed! Got mine at HRO in Salem with a free UTT-122 P25 card (thankyou Icom) and also purchased a few accessories for it too.
I live in NH where P-25 is the norm here and I also own the other digitals (pro 96/2096 and bcd396/996). Can honestly say from my P-25 experience that this Icom comes out on top! They seemed to have just about nailed it,my only gripe is the p-25 audio vs. conv. is a little soft so I have to turn up the volume slightly to compensate, other than that.. it's perfected. Great job Icom!!!. Maybe at some point they could release a firmware upgrade
to correct this.
This communication receiver is very cool, it's so nice to hear p25 comm's the way they
were meant to be without the issues the other radios have.
It is also so nice to not hear all the inter-mod crap I pickup on the scanners mentioned. Sorry Uniden, but you should of stuck with the 780's rf front-end when designing the 396 and 996. Just my 2 cents worth.
It's been alot of fun playing and learning all the great features this radio has to
offer, absolutely love the 2 antenna input diversity system! This feature is a must for
any high end receiver.

Currently have only been using it in my home as a base receiver with an outside external
Diamond D-130 broadband discone 30'up and 9916 coaxial fed,so can't comment on mobile use as of yet
Also I have been using the remote head exculsively and have not played with the supplied
software too much.
I am a junior rf engineer with over 30 years scanner/receiver experience and over 20
years working in the rf field covering dc-20ghz and NO I dont work for Icom but would
certainly entertain any serious job offers in the radio comm. field.

If you want to be your best then you should surround yourself with the best!
Happy Holidays

Interesting. I think you're the first person I've hear from that feels that way about the R2500.

I've read where other feel the same way about the P25 digital audio quality vs. the Uniden and GRE models, after the capacitor mod to allow for P25 reception from 780MHz and above, a major oversite on Icoms part. However the DV (D-Star) mode sounds like it may need some additional work.

I agree with you on that Ron,I bought the R-2500 in Australia and I also bought the UT-122 Digital Board and I compared the Radio to the Uniden 396 & 996 and it is a truly great Performance Receiver from ICOM which I am happy with and you do get what you pay for.

In the US I see the free P25 module offer from Grove Enterprises, Amateur Electronic Supply, and Universal Radio.
