Just a FYI for fellow IC-9700 users: (Note, if you use the Icom programing software, you'll need to upgrade that too to be compatible).

Changes from Version 1.24

[Spectrum scope is improved]
- A Scroll mode that can seamlessly change the displaying scope range, depending on the operating frequency, is added.
- A popup screen that displays when SPAN or EDGE change is added.
- The number of FIX EDGE memories is expanded to 4.
- Each band independently memorizes the Reference level.
- Improved the Scope function of the RS-BA1.

[Preset function is added for FT8 operation]
-A Preset function that can set each operation is added.

[Other changes]
- A Front Key Customization function that can change the function of [VOX/BK-IN], [AUTOTUNE/AFC], and [TONE/RX>CS] is added.
- A MIC Key Customization function that can change the function of [UP] and [DOWN] is added.
- A Touch function is added to the GPS icon.
- The "ddd.dddd°" format is added for the Latitude/Longitude display.
- While operating in the Data mode, the receive tone control is deactivated.
- A menu item that can return to the normal mode is added to the QUICK MENU of Terminal Mode and Access Point Mode.
- Fixed an issue where the time may not be displayed in the GPS POSITION screen.

1.40 was released for the IC-7300 as well.

Don't forget to also download the new manuals, and CS-9700.

I also recommend saving the current settings to the SD card, it's going to reset the radio.

If you rely on RT Systems, wait to upgrade. RT systems doesn't understand the new firmware yet, it took about a month for a release that worked with the new firmware for the IC-705.

From what I can see... Icom never changed the manuals for the 9700 that are currently on their download site. (I grabbed a copy of each to check). The Advanced Manual is dated March 2019 and the Basic Manual is dated August 2020.

I’m having a problem, I added the unzipped 1.30 file to my formatted SD card but it’s not wanting to upgrade for some reason. It asks if I want to save my settings, which I did, then goes to the Firmware Update screen that shows - no file-. I’m not a PC guy and I’m running Win 10 with Parallels. I’m doing something wrong but have no idea how to proceed.

You need to format the card in the radio. That will create a directory structure on the card. The firmware update file goes into the the IC-7300 folder.

Did you stick the new file on the top level card or in the 9700 folder? It needs to go in the folder.

It’s in the 9700 folder. Is the 9700E130.dat the correct file?

The file from Icom is in a compressed format, you have to unzip it and just drop the 9700E.dat file into the radios 9700 folder. If you dropped the compressed file or entire folder from Icom there it will not recognize it. With my Windoz 10 machine I clicked on the downloaded compressed file revealing the .dat file, copied that and dropped it in the 9700 folder on the radios SD card.

No I’m trying to upgrade my 9700, I didn’t make that clear in my postings.

Same thing I did, dropped the unzipped data file into the 9700 folder. The data file is showing at the bottom on the list in the 9700 folder. The 9700 accepts the SD card file but reads "illegal data" when I try to load the 9700E130 file.

The SD card is fine I've used it in the 9700 for recording etc so I'm not sure If I should re-download the 9700 file in case the file is corrupted. I'm not sure what's going on. I'm at a loss as to what else to try.

If it unzips, downloading again is not a likely solution.

I would try a different SD card or, reformat the card using the radio, and copy the .dat file again.

Or buy a PC for a couple hundred bucks and stop struggling with making a Mac play nice in a Windows world.

The unzipped file I have shows 13,314KB in size, if yours is any different then download it again. I have use a Macbook to load these files onto an SD card so that should not be the problem but its worth trying a PC or anything else at this point.

Often the problem comes from the .Zip file. I always work on Mac in Parallels Desktop without any problem, it allows me to save my VM and place it on a portable Mac in 2 minutes and I find all my configurations So the problem surely does not come from the Mac. On the other hand I had some problems with .zips and in this case, it would be necessary to do the de-zipping on the disk and not directly on the memory card. Then, place the file de-zipped on the memory card and everything should work.To summarize simply: download in windows (download), then de-zip, copy the obtained file to the memory card and install the firmware...Tell me again if you still have a problem, I should be able to help you.73 from Switzerland

@HE9JYP

I haven’t attempted to upgrade the firmware again. I’ve done all the recommend steps you suggested previously with no success, unzipped then placed on memory card. I’ll take a thorough look at it later this week. I feel sure the card is good since I can program settings/ memories and upload to the 9700. There’s obviously something I’m not doing correctly.

Thanks...

Probably didn't put the 9700E130.dat file inside of the IC-9700 folder on the SD card. Or you haven't unzipped the file correctly.

The directions on how to do this are in the advanced manual, chapter 13.

Even though I joked about the Mac/PC thing, that's not the problem here. Don't let it distract you from following the advanced manual, step by step.
