Hearing today IDOT Area 3 changed to SCom useing TG1410-1418 on T125-Grundy and T113-Will Co.....There in Coal City on clean-up and boss said make sure your all on the new radios....That sounds like the end of low band 47.10.....

Any mention of talkgroup names for 1410 or 1418, Ron? 1418 not listed in the Radio Reference database before now (I'll do that today), would like to ID it properly if possible. IDOT D3 "Local" talkgroups also listed in the 374x-375x range.

Ottawa yard is 3746, confirmed it a few weeks ago. Its in the data base.
Idot has what they call tech. 1 per yard for the most part, some cover 2 yards. They are like the foreman. They have there own trucks. There IDs could be 14**. They report back to there Dist Hq. pavements codes,trucks that are down etc.
Each yard has what the call a lead. He is reports to the Tech. Each yard has 2. They go in to 12 hr shifts when snowing.
Dist 3 covers a large area. Kankakee to Princeton.

Heard today a Kankakee truck TG 1410 calling Central dispatch asking where to go in to go in Coal city. He then asked for any Kankakee units. He was answered back by a truck with 4 digits. I think Techs are 4 digits trucks.

Most singles axles trucks. There # are in the 20-30 range some Higher. Any truck in the # 60 range is a tandem. The # I'm referring to is on top of the dump box. Not sure all the info is useful. Snowbird.

Heard Pontiac trucks Talking on TG 3743. Pontiac is in Dist 3.
Is there a comprehensive list of IDoT yards anywhere? The IDoT website only lists the district HQs but identifying users would be easier because sometimes the units aren't exactly clear when they say names
I've been wondering that too! Best I can find is searching the FCC license for IDOT (which are getting harder to find as they cancel licenses). One source I found is here where you can click the different IDOT licenses for around the state: Illinois Scanner Frequencies and Radio Frequency Reference
Another thing I've done is when looking at a particular county in the Radioreference database:
-FCC Licenses Tab
-Display All FCC Licenses
-Turn on Expired Licenses, State Licenses and Public Safety Conv
-Sort by Frequency and you'll see the IDOT licenses and in the right column (City) you will see the cities that have yards in that county

Every IDOT Highway Operations yard in Illinois A thru M
Here is every highway maintenance yard in the state of Illinois (as of a couple of years ago). I have personally put eyeballs on every one of these - and also looked for locations that turned out to be radio towers, but not operations bases.
The "Alpha Code" is the 2 or 3 character code (plus 2 or 3 numbers) on the number board on top of the dump bed on a dump truck or on the rear of other trucks.
Dist means which IDOT District does the yard report to (Dist 1 -9). I include zip code to help with geographic references.
I copied this from an Excel sheet I made, so the reader will have to re-format.
Note that some of the locations listed in frequency databases are really just radio towers, not the location of an IDOT facility - Ohio, IL, falls into that category. Similarly, Forreston is mainly just a transmitter site, although there is a small material yard at the base of the radio tower.

Here is every highway maintenance yard in the state of Illinois (as of a couple of years ago). I have personally put eyeballs on every one of these - and also looked for locations that turned out to be radio towers, but not operations bases.
The "Alpha Code" is the 2 or 3 character code (plus 2 or 3 numbers) on the number board on top of the dump bed on a dump truck or on the rear of other trucks.
Dist means which IDOT District does the yard report to (Dist 1 -9). I include zip code to help with geographic references.
I copied this from an Excel sheet I made, so the reader will have to re-format.
Note that some of the locations listed in frequency databases are really just radio towers, not the location of an IDOT facility - Ohio, IL, falls into that category. Similarly, Forreston is mainly just a transmitter site, although there is a small material yard at the base of the radio tower.

Every IDOT Yard in the state of Illinois N thru Z
Here is the second half of my list of every highway maintenance yard in the state of Illinois (as of a couple of years ago). I have personally put eyeballs on every one of these - and also looked for locations that turned out to be radio towers, but not operations bases.
The "Alpha Code" is the 2 or 3 character code (plus 2 or 3 numbers) on the number board on top of the dump bed on a dump truck or on the rear of other trucks.
Dist means which IDOT District does the yard report to (Dist 1 -9). I include zip code to help with geographic references.
I copied this from an Excel sheet I made, so the reader will have to re-format.
Note that some of the locations listed in frequency databases are really just radio towers, not the location of an IDOT facility - Ohio, IL, falls into that category. Similarly, Forreston is mainly just a transmitter site, although there is a small material yard at the base of the radio tower.

Here is the second half of my list of every highway maintenance yard in the state of Illinois (as of a couple of years ago). I have personally put eyeballs on every one of these - and also looked for locations that turned out to be radio towers, but not operations bases.
The "Alpha Code" is the 2 or 3 character code (plus 2 or 3 numbers) on the number board on top of the dump bed on a dump truck or on the rear of other trucks.
Dist means which IDOT District does the yard report to (Dist 1 -9). I include zip code to help with geographic references.
I copied this from an Excel sheet I made, so the reader will have to re-format.
Note that some of the locations listed in frequency databases are really just radio towers, not the location of an IDOT facility - Ohio, IL, falls into that category. Similarly, Forreston is mainly just a transmitter site, although there is a small material yard at the base of the radio tower.

Holy idot !!!! Fantastic info.
"LA" are landscaping units from the IDoT "special operations yard" at N 30th Rd & E 12th Rd between Ottawa and Utica in LaSalle County right along I-80. There are "Bridge" units working out of that yard as well. They use 3750 as their "local" talkgroup
I've heard traffic from "SS" units working around the Sterling area as well. Any ideas?

Alpha Codes Are Duplicated Between Districts
Note that the "Alpha Codes" assigned to the various yards are often duplicated from IDOT district to district. In other words, as was posted above, you can have a "Landscape" yard in Dist 3 with Alpha Code LA on their trucks, and then drive to Chicago and see the Dist 1 Landscape trucks again with code LA. Alpha Codes B, C, H, J, K, L, R are used multiple times across the state.
You may also see trucks with only a number (1 through 9) where the Alpha Code should normally be. Those are vehicles assigned to that district's headquarters.
In addition to a "Landscape Yard (or crew)", every District has a "Bridge" yard to inspect and repair bridges, and a "Sign Shop" to make, repair, and replace signs. (Would a private contractor really use 3 or 4 guys and 2 trucks to replace a stop sign? Not an issue to be debated here.)
My point is that Alpha Codes are re-used as you travel from district to district around the state.
MikeyC: I would guess that your "SS" units are from your district's Sign Shop.
Note that these Alpha Codes and unit numbers are not to be confused with the IDOT asset number (the "T12345" number) stenciled on the front fenders.
