Downloaded it twice from ICOM Japan...extracted to the SD card as per the instructions.

Not too sure....whats the difference between USA and non-USA firmware? I'm in Canada so I'm left wondering what I should use. I tried the USA rev first...which failed.

It shouldn't matter downloading from the Japan site. I don't have an R8600, but I do have three Icom radios that I've updated the firmware on. I've always used the Japan site. New versions of the firmware usually show up there first.

Only other guess is that you're doing something wrong..( ie did you use the radio to format the card)?
The upgrade procedure has to be done exactly as they say.

I would think the non-USA firmware would be illegal if it unblocks the cellular band. But you said you tried the USA version and it failed. Why not contact ICOM rather than risking bricking an expensive receiver?

USA firmware is written to run on R8600's with a serial number starting 02, non-USA runs on, I think, all others. The 02 block is the US specific, cell blocked, version. So look at your serial, if it starts with 02 use the US firmware version, if it starts with anything else use the non-US version.

Other than that make sure you are not trying to run the 1.20 version updater of the CS software thinking it is the R8600 firmware updater.

Also, make sure you are selecting the correct file from the R8600 pull-down as several files may appear. Select 8600E120 (non-USA version) and NOT ._8600E120. You may need to scroll down to a second screen page.

Let us know the results.

It was simply the wrong file....

The non-USA version of 1.20 went in fine

Never really know sometimes where we (Canuks) sit with respect to manufacturers 'Regions'.

Sure we're non-USA, but we usually get the US market products.

I have a -04 model (unblocked) so I thought it might have been that...but no.

Anyways...on to testing! Not too impressed with the SP-39 however!

Glad you got it working .

I did not get the SP-39 because of the reviews .
