Mostly listening to out of state first responders, police and fire depts during the latest storm wave that came across. As far as the operation of the sds100, I don’t have a clue since it’s my first scanner, so it will be a challenge and wish I was a lot younger too. The bearcatwarehouse guy indicated being located in the DFW area, most is encrypted and digital but he’s in the selling business. Idk. There’s a lot learning and probably overwhelming but I’m retired will get me away from all the honeydos so to speak! Thanks!
At age 69 (and almost 70) I decided I wanted ti get a Unication voice pager. A lot of help was received right here in getting those set up. Ask questions and you'll be amazed how much help you'll get. Good luck !!

Sounds good.. what are the advantages of the unication pager over, say the sds100? What about analog & P25? 800 MHz? Wish i knew more about it but I’m getting here. I just like being informed where I live, when we hear emergency vehicles nearby, weather updates, like Skywarn etc. I’m 72 also.. what steered you toward the pager? Sorry about all the questions. Thanks

If you want to scan different sites or systems at different times, the Unication won't do that. At home I scan only one simulcast system so, it's worked out well in my area. I still use other scanners however to listen to other stuff not on that one particular system. If you want to listen to Skywarn, and a PD at the same time, you're probably better off with a scanner.

I have two G-5s which have 700/800 and the VHF band is the other band. You cannot get one that does all three bands. As a ham, I use ham radios for my Skywarn stuff, but at that, there is some analog stuff and 2 P-25 conventional frequencies I also scan at home at times and I have to use a different device for that. I can switch my G5 to VHF and use it there but at the sacrifice of hearing the trunking system at the same time. If your only interest was a 700/800 trunking system, they work great (better than anything else I tested that was not an actual subscriber radio) but they have limitations on what they can do, and you'd probably want a 2nd device to fill in the gaps on occasion.
