At 01:25 UTC (6:25 PM local) I'm finally starting to hear more voice activity on the MWARA frequencies, particularly San Francisco on 8843, 10057 and 11282. Gander is in there as well on 8891, and coming in quite strong. These are mostly Selcal checks, as usual. For the past few years I could hardly make them out. I guess propagation must have improved a little, and perhaps relaxing of pandemic restrictions are putting more flights in the air than during the past year.

Hi, Lino. You have quite an advantage over me, with your location near the ocean, as well as that active loop. I'm inland between mountain ranges, and was using 23 ft. of wire indoors with my Icom R75. Even so, Gander also came in loud and clear on my portable, with just its built-in whip, and likewise indoors. Signals from eastern North America are usually poor at my location, or at least rarely heard.

I've been hearing Gander 8891 pretty well on my Satellit 800 connected to "the horizontal room loop" (50 feet of wire run indoors run around near the ceiling of our sun room). What that setup, I was hearing both ground and planes.

The Tecsun Pl-880 also picks up Gander sometimes on its whip antenna.

I'm about 1,000 miles away from Gander in upstate New York.

During the 1990s, when propagation was much better, I heard lots of traffic on the LDOC frequencies, including phone patches between pilots and doctors on the ground for advice due to medical emergencies onboard. They were using a service called MedLink.
