? Inflight Emergency Communications

With two of the most recent inflight emergencies carried live on CNN/FOX/MSNBC (Jet Blue & Midwest), I was wondering if, during the flight. the crews are communicating with their home bases via the standard ARINC VHF network or are they utilizing some other means of communications for working out the problem with the help of the people on the ground.

Yes, they are calling their maintainance base via ARINC and other inflight satelite telephones to try to resolve the problems.
