recent news article said that funds have been allocated to build a new county fire station on Morgan Road

so we did some digging and found a bunch of new fire stations in Greenwood County South Carolina

Greenwood County SC - Google My Maps ..... zerg90 map of fire stations in Greenwood County

its looks like they are building a county fire department (with weekday staffing] to fill in the areas *between* the existing volunteer stations based on a 2016 study of the VFDs .... they also seem to be moving toward merger of 'county' fire and County EMS ... they have added fire engines to several of the County EMS stations

looking at the radio info ... it looks like most of the FCC radio licenses are identified

1. wasnt 151.04 the county fire channel originally ... maybe it was shared with county public works ... it is still licensed for 4 repeaters

2. the FDs have talkgroups listed on the palmetto system .. is that the primary system for the FDs now?

3. Greenwood City has 155.04 licensed ... ???

4. Greenwood Technical College has 453.05 R licensed ... ???

5. Ascend Performance Materials, formerly Monsanto, is licensed for 154.43 for 1 base and 8 mobiles ... FCC code is 90.21 which is "fire service" ... do they have a fire brigade? (I dont see it listed online anywhere]

6. SC Forestry has bases on 31.78 and 151.10 in Greenwood County ... ???

7. SLED has multi repeaters on 155 Mhz licensed in Greenwood County ... have they been turned off?

8. 453.525 is licensed as a repeater to Greenwood County ... ???

9. 855.2125 857.4375 857.7125 857.7375 all seem to be repeaters at the county landfill ... ???

10. SC DNR shows 151.25 M and 159.165 MO3 ... ???

11. SC has 453.325R 453.50R 453.875R licensed at Dyson ... is that all for the State Park?

Bottom line ... many changes afoot in Greenwood County

the Broadcastify feed for Greenwood County fire seems to be dead ... nothing heard in 3 hours ....Greenwood County Fire Live Audio Feed

All of greenwood county operates on the palmetto 800 system and so does all state agencies including DNR and SLED however state parks operate on conventional UHF and state forestry on conventional VHF. Greenwood county fire may simulcast dispatch on conventional VHF but all operations are on Palmetto 800.

Greenwood Sheriff and police are encrypted. 800 Fire and EMS was in the clear but I can't confirm that. DNR and SLED are encrypted. The only state forestry I hear are the fire break bulldozers and I hear Edgefield, Greenwood, Newberry, Abbeville and Saluda on it and sometimes Aiken county, is 159.405 MHz. The transmitter is on the Verizon tower right outside of Johnston, SC. SCHP is in the clear except for some reason the tag repossessers, lol.

As has been noted by others, most if not all of Greenwood County's public safety agencies have migrated to the Palmetto 800 statewide trunked radio system in the last couple of years. Indications is that all Law Enforcement traffic is encrypted, and much of Fire and EMS may also be encrypted. That may be why the Broadcastify feed is "dead" as no hobbyist can decrypt encrypted radio traffic. Here's another thread where Greenwood County was discussed a couple of years ago.

Also as noted, most state agency radio traffic is carried on Palmetto 800. That includes SCHP (currently in the clear), SLED, DNR, PPP, DOC, EMD, and some others. Aside from SCHP, state law enforcement agencies are encrypted.

Forestry, SCP&R and SCDOT are two notable agencies that don't have a majority of their radio traffic on Palmetto 800. But they still have some talkgroups that are active with limited traffic.

Many agencies maintain licenses for their "old" radio frequencies even after they migrate away from them. Some agencies maintain their old radio systems as back-ups or allow them to be used by other agencies. Others just keep the licenses even after the infrastructure is gone. This is handled differently agency to agency. There's no real way to determine if a licensed frequency is still in use other than active listening. So plug your list of frequencies in your original post into your scanner and see what you hear. I'd say if you don't hear anything in a week's time, it's likely that you won't miss much if you don't continue to monitor.

I'm fairly certain that both SLED and DNR maintain their VHF repeaters. I don't hear much at all on them anymore here in the Upstate. Other regions may be different.

Note that information listed in the database portion of RadioReference (not the FCC portion) is crowd-sourced. Hobbyists who actually monitor the agencies and areas are asked to submit information that keeps the database as accurate as possible. That includes submitting information about frequencies that are no longer active and should be removed from the database. As you learn about active or inactive frequencies in your area, please submit that information so others can benefit.

I just noticed on WildCAD that there is a wildfire helo listed at "Greenwood HB" ... I assume that is 'Greenwood Helibase' but I cant find any specific info on Google about it ... Google Maps satellite view does not reveal any marked helispot at the county airport nor at Bradley USFS Work Center

I did find this USFS Southern Area Helibases which shows GRD as Greenwood ... "GRD" is Greenwood County Airport

Can anyone confirm that the feds fly a wildfire helo out of Greenwood County Airport in the springtime ?

https://gacc.nifc.gov/sacc/logistics/aircraft/SumterNFAFHM.pdf nice map of numbered helispots on Sumter NF

https://gacc.nifc.gov/sacc/logistics/aircraft/FrancisMarionNFAFHM.pdf map of helispots on Francis Marion NF ... HB is the 'Seed Orchard Helibase' ... which is obvious on sat view

How often do you hear Forestry on the Johnston transmitter?

Is this a repeater, or just a transmitter being used for dispatch?

This is just a transmitter used for dispatching the bulldozers/plows, the antenna search page only shows it as a single frequency. I suspect its connected either through fiber cable or one of the microwave dishes mounted on the antenna structure. The transmitter is shown as pushing 110 Watts and 136 Watts effective at approximately 500 feet AGL.
I hear forestry on it practically daily sometimes more especially when the air is dry and windy.
