Wonder how he "has also used the device to speak to train workers from transportation company Norfolk Southern" ?

You mean you can't use a Uniden BC125AT to talk to people?

Kids are great. He's twelve, and he's liked trains "since [he] was young". I'm sure he really meant that too. When you are twelve, young means "four or five". When you are my age? Anyone under 40!

Many railfans are using boafengs or similar. The temptation to TX is too great for some. Its all fun until the FCC or rail operator shows up at your door. The penalties are pretty harsh from the rail companies especially if they go after you for interfering with operations. Yes just the time it took for the rail employee to say "Who is this?' is enough to nail you.

Bottom line do like the rest of the responsible community does. Monitor to your hearts content but do not think about TXing no matter how good your intentions are. Know the emergency numbers for the lines your on. The dispatcher can call the train and be believed immediately in any situation.

The pictures in the article show a Uniden type scanner...I have a baofeng uv5r radio, it looks nothing like the picture...

Hopefully it means only that he used the context of something he monitored to strike up a conversation with a worker.

I agree, but the way the article was written...plus the picture...leaves me "scratching" my head so to speak...unless Uniden has started to make the BC125AT with TX capabilities...

Not to start an argument it is up to the rail authorities to determine trespassing. Most rail systems have a very open policy for railfans. The community in general has shown great responsibility and respect for the rules. The result is railfans are given a very wide latitude when they are fanning. The only other group with similar 'privileges' is Aviation fans. Lets not mess this up by taking advantage of it. It only takes one incident for businesses to take a CYA attitude and ban everything.

There is nothing in that picture or article that suggests that he is trespassing. @iMONITOR How did we go from "feel good story about young man who really likes watching trains and wants to be a conductor" to accusing a 12 year-old of trespassing?

This is the Culpepper VISITOR CENTER. I think people are allowed to be there!

Yes, there are railfans that trespass to get "that special photo". They are fortunately in the minority, and frowned upon by most railfans.

I don't think he's in that small percentage that doesn't respect property rights.

Yes, the article is flawed. The skills of proofreading and editing news articles seem to have disappeared. He's obviously not using his scanner to talk to the rail crews.

Did I fall asleep while reading this thread and wake up on QRZ?

For his birthday, he received a portable scanner for rail enthusiasts that allows him to follow daily operations. Kaleb has also used the device to speak to train workers from transportation company Norfolk Southern.

If you read into that last sentence, it's clear the person who wrote the story has no idea about scanners and or communications. It should say he used the device to listen to train workers.

Also article like to make the topic sound real exciting. Fact checking often suffers when this happens.

I am glad such a young person is showing interest in fanning. The article may interest other younger people in fanning rail, aviation even other services. It will be the new young fans who will be driving commercial hardware and software development. Lets encourage and support them rather than throw potential roadblocks in their paths.
