Jon did the internal GPS mod to my SDS 100. I have made a favorite of All MPSCS towers in Michigan. GPS shows on the bottom of the screen but above ID scanning it scrolls through All the MPSCS towers. The range set at 0.
I have the same programming in my other SDS100(no internal GPS mod), hook up an external GPS and it only scrolls through 3-4 tower sites nearby, same range set at 0.
Jon did the internal GPS mod to my 436 and it works properly just like my SDS 100 that does not have the internal GPS mod done.
I sent Jon a note on this and have not heard back but I realize he is very busy.

Am I missing something or maybe have a setting wrong? thanks

Aren't you supposed to turn off all the favorite lists and turn on Full Database?

Gawd no....!
One of the beauties of Uniden's GPS functionality is the ability to turn favorites on/off as you travel. In fact, I've build all my favorites around their locality - using rectangles. My radios literally switch favorite lists as I cross state/county/city/reservation boundaries.

First, is the GPS functioning? (Do you see the GPS icon on your display?)

Suggestion: edit your display(s) to show the lat/long. Then you know you have a GPS lock. The GPS icon only tells you that the radio is seeing the GPS data string. Which, BTW, it will not if you have your baud rate set incorrectly.

And - as others posted above, is location control on?

Thanks for all the replies and sorry for the delay giving an update as I was out of town for the weekend.
It was location control, I did not have it on and now it works as it is supposed to.
As noted in my first post, "GPS shows on the bottom of the screen".
Thanks again.

I think Jon and his expertise are gone, at least for the foreseeable future. While he has a somewhat checkered past, his dealings on this forum appeared to be above board. I seemed to have lost his phone number but I probably wouldn't call him. His business is his business. I hate that he's not around anymore. His work on my SDS100 was excellent. The internal GPS still performs flawlessly and NO!, I won't sell it. (It's my ace-in-the-hole in case I decide to buy that Maserati. :) )

Darn I just came here to see if he had resumed doing the GPS mod. I'd love to get mine modded, it was such a nice neat little package.

Where is Jon now and why is he out of commission?

The last thing he had on his website before it went away was there were family issues and he wouldn't be doing any work until further notice. That notice had been up quite a long time and the website had no other changes after it. Then it expired and a domain squatter took over the domain.

Are all his legal woes behind him? I don't know the nature of his charges or if they are still active. I wish I could find someone who would be able to install an internal GPS and/or make a new battery latch. Two of my SDS 100 batteries got into the Viagra and are now too bloated to fit the radio compartment.

So, question here about the reception of an internal GPS.....

Supposedly if we're using a BR355N puck or a Uniden BCGPSK unit, you're supposed to have it on the dash or in a place where the sky is visible. If someone creates, or created, an internal GPS, then wouldn't you need to literally be outside of your house/car for it to lock?

1. Not all GPS are equal as some work much better than others.
2. Outdoors is best, but heavy foliage can be problematic.
3. A GPS placed near a window will get some view of the sky. ( Tinted foil covered windows to reduce UV and sunlight are RF unfriendly )

I have various devices with an internal GPS and some work better than others indoors and outdoors. My testing also found an external GPS like a puck, even indoors, acquired a geo location a bit faster, but not always. Basically, a newer external puck is a wise choice for fast acquisition, but it may be too inconvenient. Compromise can be fun.
