I'm aloud ham operator KC7VE.
I'm also a GMRS user.
But I have a use for CB. I have thought if it's not currently being used, or used much, i could use it for personal family network. :) it would be like having an entire network for myself. Even better, using FM. But I doubt I'd be that lucky.

I have been doing some testing. I have two radios scanning. One is a base with a smallish vehicle antenna and the other is a mobile scanning at a faster rate. Both radios transmit and receive ok. But...

In several days of scanning I have received no reception from other CBs. Is it that dead? Or could it be a distance thing. Im probably 5 or 6 miles from freeways.

I did pick up a transmission a few
days ago but it sounded like transmission between two bases in another state.

How much CB is still in use?

We still use it to coordinate with loggers when we travel through active logging on the way to remote sites.

It's not dead, but it is no where near the condition is was back in the 70's, 80's or even 90's.

Usage will be location dependent. Located near interstates or big terminals, you may hear more traffic. Out on the fringes, probably not much. Time of day will play into this, also.

Antenna plays a big part. I know you said you are using a mobile antenna, but is it outside, in the clear, on a good ground plane? Have your RF gain turned up, squelch adjusted?

For what you describe, CB can be useful. Add FM, as you stated, and a radio that will support CTCSS, and you'll have a useful tool.

Local use varies, but skip operators always pop up when conditions allow. Heard quite a bit on .385 on my way to town just now.
