• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Is CB still use ?

Yes but unless theres Skip coming in you will need a better antenna than the one the scanner provides maybe a nice K40 or a telescopic BNC if its portable.Skip happens when theres a temperature inversion
and the band conditions allow long range communications hence making your scanner receive alot more
than on a usual day.AKA you probably wont hear much unless you live near a highway or your neighbor talks locally.Range is like 5 miles or worse nowadays depending upon band conditions.

Skip happens when there is a temperature inversion? That's a new one on Crappy Band. Might happen on VHF. But I think skip on crappy band is independent on temperature.

Trophospheric ducting mainly affects vhf, uhf and higher. Ionized F1 and F2 layers of the ionosphere would be mainly responsible for skip on CB.

Still used here in Australia We have US 40 and our local 80 channels on 477Mhz,
The 27Mhz band is not as crowded as it used to be, There is little to no Am used here any more.. All SSB 35 LSB is our call. When you can get past the odd few dickheads !

Whan All Else Fails

I started using CB during the 1973 oil embargo as did many individuals. I returned to CB use during the 1980's after a period without it. To this very day, I am using a Cobra 25 Classic with a K40 antenna & K40 Microphone.

I've lost count of the number of times I've been helped by truckers, particularly when a major highway or interstate is shut down for various reasons. I've learned about road conditions ahead when bad weather was present. At times, it has allowed me to talk directly to a driver, especially when they have driven poorly.

I've encountered times when my Beltronics 995 did not alert me to a speed cop ahead, but my trusty CB did. Typically, truckers alert you of bears ahead, not always.

I rarely speed, so ignore the bear reports, but I keep my cobra on when Im driving around the state in my work truck. I cant even count the number of times it has allowed me to exit the interstate to take an alternate route to avoid a wreck, backup, or standstill. There are the occasional idiots out there, but with the short range, they are out of range rather quickly.

Its also fun to hook up with a trucker driving the same direction late at night, just for a little conversation to keep you awake.

I would much prefer truckers would move to FRS, or the FCC would allow NFM modulation on CB, but other than putting up with skip, its still quite useful.
