I'd bet it's #2: the radio's USB port.
I thought so too, but then why would it communicate with the PC? I can read/write without any problems from the scanner to the PC USING THIS CABLE WITH THE PUCK DANGLING OFF THE END. Its obviously not the cable then, but if I can read/write to/from the scanner its probably not the scanner either? Unless the USB data pins are different for the PC comms and for the Serial comms? But I can use my scanner as a serial device (think proscan)... So how can it be an issue with the port?

Check this out...
The jacks are standard USB mini and micro and the pinouts are widely available online.

The only quirk is that the GPS input goes to the ID pin (next to ground) of the USB mini jack.

wow good find! that certainly is an interesting quirk. I opened it up, and everything looks good from what I can see. I didn't want to mess with it too much, and it's hard to see to well under the plate. I guess the next step is to send it in?

Actually, based on the above info, it seems that the issue was the BC-OTGC cable. After some research, I got the BC-SGPS working, and ordered myself a new BC-OTGC cable so that I might get the BC-GPSK puck working again. I guess I hadn't tried the 9600 bps rate with the BC-SGPS. I put the results of my research into an easy to read guide in case it helps someone who finds all the nuggets of info scattered around this site just a little confusing. The guide is here.
