Is there a way to "listen" to data picked up on your scanner?

I hear a lot of "data" on the scanner.

Is there any way to somehow plug the scanner into a PC and pick it up?

Does that make sense?

Yes, it's possible. Feasibility would depend on what exactly the data is. Much of it is encrypted, such as data traffic for law enforcement MDT's. Some is SCADA, which is telemetry. That's not likely to be encrypted, but it's also not likely to be anything that can be "read". It might be water tank levels or on/off status of a pump someplace.

Some is control channel data. There are programs that can decode that, and if you're really into the functional details of a trunking system, it can be quite interesting. And some of it might not be data at all, but digitized voice. The right scanner would decode most of that with no problem.

I'm surprised the SAPS haven't blasted you for wanting to decode it! Yeah it's not legal, but your question was "is there a way to decode it"! It all depends on the format of the data. There are some that can be, such as pagers (programs are available on the internet), others may take having to know what the program is and finding the correct software to monitor it. Most of whey you will see is nothing more than numbers going back and forth. To us, it means nothing, but to the computers, it means everything!

Now you have peaked my interest.

What are some programs for control channels? Or pager data?

Re-read the first paragraph of that page. It explains what to do/use.

I guess my question was

"The Discriminator output is available at Test Point 4 (TP4). This tap can be used to feed applications such as UniTrunker (although with UniTrunker, it's not really necessary, since the PC/IF datastream will also work)."

So if I have my reprogramming cable no need to do the Discriminator output mod to the PCboard of the scanner?

I have a PRO-106

Correct. That's only works for trunking control channels though.

Other applications do require discriminator audio which you won't get from the port. DSD and Pager decoding programs are examples.

A friend and I built a code/data decoder "in the old days" to decode systems like pagers, department of agriculture repeaters, water district auto transmitters, etc... We used a Commodore 64 for the decoder. Here is an exciting example of some of the decoded transmissions:

14 233 54 54 742 84 969 2334 843 12 04

and

0A F4 34 5D 33 85 9F AD E2 17

and my personal favorite from a text pager

54 33 234 6029482236 32 5B 00 68 85 68 69 32 87 72 69 82 69 83 77 89 32 67 65 82 33 00 3

In ASCII code the message says, "DUDE WHERES MY CAR!" (No kidding).

After about an hour, we realized it wasn't that interesting and we had wasted a whole day building the decoding system when we should have been playing computer games instead... ;- )

That is the extent of my data decoding efforts...
