• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Sometimes you hear sirens going by and you hurry up and power on the G5 only to have it sit there and load up for a while with the annoying dots you gotta wait for. Meanwhile, you're missing out on crucial radio traffic. Is there a way to make this thing start listening right away and not have to wait for a long annoying bootup?

Yes, by not turning it off. Today's electronics take time to power up, TVs, cellphones, commercial radios, scanners, computers, they all take time, some longer than others.

That’s why I left my G5 on firmware Version 1.2. It immediately starts scanning for control channels on power up. From what I understand, the change was made to fully reboot with Version 2 and up to get rid of the battery drain that was occurring when powered down. I recently updated my G4 from Version 2.02 to the current version and I’ve noticed that the unit can be powered off over 2 hours before reverting back to full reboot. With 2.02 it could only be off for about 30 minutes before having to fully reboot on power up.

Actually I need to make some corrections to the above. My G4 was on 1.3 where it would reboot. I updated my G4 to the current 2.02 for pre COVID G4’s. The ones being sold right now use 2.03.

I have 1.35 on one of my G5s and 2.02 on the other one. I'll have to see if I can actually tell a difference. Other than comparing the two in actual use, I never really paid any attention to the boot up stuff. I've got radios that take equally as long to boot up and start receiving.
Thanks for clarifying. I thought 2.02 was the latest stuff out for the ones not being sold currently or very recently.

What firmware are you using. Mine sat about 6 hours in the amplified charging base, (off) and I just timed them and within 2 seconds it had acquired my "home" system I monitor and was receiving. That's way quicker than some of the radios I have come on to receive mode.

If you need quicker than that, I guess @RaleighGuy has the correct answer.

Like others said, leave it on. Are you in Wake County? You can also look at Pulse Point:

So I had a fire this afternoon and I turned my G4 off as got out of truck at the station. so we didn’t get back for 4 hours and when I turned my G4 back on, it went into the search mode vice full boot up. This is a big improvement with the latest firmware. The unit would go back to full boot up after being off only an hour with the last firmware (1.3).
