Is there anything worth listening to that is unencrypted in Kent County?

Because all of LE is encrypted here in Kent County, I was wondering if there is anything left worth listening to here in our part of the state? I was thinking of upgrading from my old Radio Shack scanner to one of the Home Patrol scanners BUT, well, is it worth it? Thanks in advance for any and all opinions and/or advice!

Check the listing below since you didn't say what you were interested in. Kent County is mostly on the MPSCS system and is simulcast, so you would need a SDS100/200 scanner to listen to them. Fire, EMS, Public Works, Schools, etc. are mostly in the clear.

Just to add to what's already been said. I prefer to keep my scanner in open scan mode. You never know who or what will show up on your local site from around the state and give you something good to listen to. While your local law may be encrypted, there is still a lot around the state that is not, including several of your surrounding county law. Worth an upgrade in my opinion.

Thanks for that reply and for the information as well! As a 74 year old retiree I am interested in monitoring (almost?) anything . I used to really enjoy listening to my local police , Grand Rapids and surrounding towns, but encryption has put an end to that! It's good to know that fire, EMS, railroads , schools, etc. are still "open", for the most part. I'll upgrade and see (or listen) to whatever comes along. Many thanks!
