What are the choices?

Commercial radios such as Motorola and Kenwood. I've just about given up on scanners except for searching out stuff. All my everyday monitoring is done with Motorola radios with the exception of one Ericson radio for some Edacs systems.

I hope people remember that Whistler makes more than scanners, and although there are some very good and interesting points being discussed about what new units should or should not include, too much complaining may just scare them away from the scanner market. I have seen this happen before. I also agree that no matter who makes a radio, it is impossible to please everybody. Lets just cross our fingers and hope for the best and maybe they will keep their eyes and ears open on learning just what is wanted and needed in the scanner market.

All they have to do is bring out GRE quality without FUBAR'ing too much to make it cheap- for a larger profit.

If there's anyone from Whistler monitoring these threads:

Please make the Whistler logo as small as possible. There's not much cachet to the Whistler name.

Whistler Scanners

Spoke to Whistler today. They stated the phase 1 scanners ( Pro-197,106) and the analog scanners would be out in the middle of June. The phase 2 TDMA scanners with a keyboard ( PSR-800 &900) would be out in the middle of July.

So you're saying Whistler's upcoming versions of the PSR-800/900 will have KEYBOARDS? If so, that would be good news indeed.

Technically the old GRE PSR 800 had a keyboard as well (Just no number keys). Did you ask about a numeric keypad specifically or did you just ask about a keyboard in general?

Are those commercial radios Motorola and Kenwood higher end and cost alot more?

Some are expensive and some are not. Depends on what you need to listen too. I can tell you this, anything P25 be it an old 3600 system, phase I or II system the commercial radios are superior in performance over any scanner.

Instead of overload vs. poor reception, think of it this way: GRE/Radio Shack/Whistler scanners are great for people that live in rural areas and/or are trying to listen to distant weak signals. Uniden's scanners are best for people that live in cities or close to high powered transmitters. And the well equipped scanner listener will have some of both to be prepared for all listening environments.

What he said!

Or use them for DX trunked systems. Excellent ears and decoding tools.
