Please help me understand this. I scan frequencies manually, then I save them in favorite list (I make a new one). I set the system name. Then, I make a department, and a channel (then I set the frequency that I want to analyze)

I go to analyze, and then I go to search the system. I enter the name. NOTHING. It's like for some reason when I manually input systems they do not show up or let me scan them. I do not know why but it's driving me crazy. I'm new to scanning and I can't find anything in the manual. Am I doing something wrong?

It will not let me scan my favorites list either when I do this. For some reason, none of my favorites will let me scan only that favorites list.

edit: it also says "select system no system found matching your entry. But I just saved it as a favorite and made the system all the way down to the channel...no clue

No I didn't do that, is that a must when creating a favorites list? I have it "on" in the "select lists to monitor" list.

To be honest with you I am very familiar with the x36 radios and the SDS radios and I really didn't follow what you are doing. Are you programming the radio through Sentinel? I didn't really follow what you were doing manually etc etc. But I didn't hear you say that you assigned each favorite list with its own quick key number. That means that you can just toggle a favorites list on and off by pushing the number of the favorites list and then enter. Each time you do it, it turns a favorites list on and off.

Oh no problem, I'll try to be more concise because I was all over the place :)

- I was scanning using custom scan and I found a frequency that I was interested in, so I saved it to a new favorites list. I did all of this without sentinel software, on the bcd436hp radio
- Then, I wanted to analyze the system. So I went to analyze, and then I searched for that new system that I made in the favorites list.
- It is acting like the system does not exist. I tried renaming the system in favorites, nothing worked.
- Then, I tried to "scan" with just the favorites list selected (no full database, nothing else) and it is saying "nothing to scan"

For some reason when I make a favorites list, it acts like the favorites list does not exist. Maybe I am missing a step required to make it usable?

In addition to the last message above, I wanted to send the pictures. I gave the favorites list the number 0 for quick key. Then I tried to scan just my favorites list only, it gives me this nothing to scan message.

If you set a System or Department Quick Key, those too must be enabled as well as any Service Types you set those channels to (Probably Custom 1). I can tell there is no System QK 0-9 assigned, but cannot tell others. Odds are this is the Service Types not being enabled.

I'm just throwing spitballs at the wall here because I honestly don't know what you're doing I get it that you are listening to a custom scan or a limit search? and when you find something you want to put it on a favorites list. Well now you have a favorites list called zero but it obviously has nothing on it and that's why you're getting the message. I guess you're not using Sentinel to program your radio and you were trying to do it manually.

Since I really don't know exactly what you've done I'm going to just give you this. Go back to your custom search or limit search and start looking for a frequency. When it stops on a active frequency push Channel it will stop on that active frequency. Then push enter and follow the prompt to add it to a favorites list follow the prompt and when it says to choose a favorites list choose the favorites list that you number 0 whatever the name of that favorites list is push function and now that active frequency you found on your limit search will now be on favorites list of zero and there will be at least one frequency you will now be scanning on favorites list zero. That's the only way I can approach it from what I think you're doing.

For Analyze to work on a trunked system, there are several things you need to do:
Create the system (you indicate that you did that)

The new system must have the following:
A Site, with a frequency entered

A Department, that cannot be empty
For a trunked system that you want to analyze (or, for that matter, a DMR system that you want to use the LCN Finder) must have a Department. Since this is apparently a new system, and you do not, yet, have any identified talkgroups, enter a "place keeper" TGID. So, create your Department. I just leave it, initially, named "Department000" (that's the name that pops up when you create the department).
Now, add a talkgroup to the department. When you go to add a TGID, the scanner will initially name it "Channel000", with a TGID as a zero. Change the zero to a 1, or any other non-blank number of your choice.

Once it has a site, with a frequency, and a department that is not empty, the scanner will let you run Analyze, or the LCN Finder.
For a new, suspected, trunked system. set it to ID Search under the system options (analyze will still work whether set as ID Search or ID Scan, as long as the department has something in it).

Thanks hiegtx... from what I read he was doing a custom search of conventional frequencies without having a numbered favorites list established. I didn't get that he was doing any kind of system. His database is off so he's not searching the database it looks like he was doing a limit search. He did create the favorites list of zero which of course probably did not have a custom Alpha tag. But that favorites list was empty as there was nothing to scan.

I don't know what he was trying to analyze since I think he's doing conventional frequencies. Thanks for jumping in. You definitely have more patience for this than I do LOL.(y)

I saw he mentioned 'analyze' in his initial post. Analyze is not an option for a conventional system, so I presumed that it was some sort of trunked system.

I ran across the 'department' quirk when trying to nail down a number of systems that are not in the database. These are businesses that, if in the database at all, are listed as conventional or LTR. I created a couple of 'dummy' systems then tried to analyze them. No dice. That's when I saw that a department was required, as without one, they will not show up as available systems in Analyze or LCN Finder. For that matter, they would not come up if you were trying to run a Discovery session.

Any chance a Service Type issue is going on? When the frequency was saved, did you assign it something like "Custom 1" but the "Custom 1" Service Type has not been enabled in the Menu>Select Service Types?

Also was any location information entered, if the Favorites List has Location Control On?

If these are not helpful, there is a Nothing to Scan Checklist sticky at the top of this page. It was put there to help folks experiencing this issue to give them most all of the possible reasons.

Yes I did see the analyze reference but assumed that he didn't realize it was not for conventional objects so I just ignored it. I did get that he was picking his conventional frequencies by doing a custom search.

At least I was able to help him get a favorites list numbered with a quick key albeit it was empty with nothing to scan LOL.

Yeah. Sometimes the simplest things make you shoot yourself in the foot. We've all done it at one time or another (at least the ones that will admit it).

I do not use QK’s. I never have because I don’t need to. My memory requirements are small. But it’s agreed, QK’s provide a valuable assist when programming large amounts of data. It’s just that they are NOT necessary to create a working Favorites List. I have created and programmed numerous Favorites Lists on both the BCDx36HP and the SDS models without the use of QK’s.

Hey thank you so much, that helped a ton! I read over this reply and it tremendously helped me. I was feeling crazy for a bit! ha.

Yes, that is exactly it. I had to make a new favorite group and from there it let me choose the system type. When I quick saved and created a new favorites list, I don't think it let me create a system type. So from there I basically created a new system type and did exactly what you said. I am still new so I need to learn what LCN finder and everything is so I will read about it.

Also, I see ID SCAN in system options, but I do not see ID search. Is that normal?

Thanks again so much for your help this helped me a ton!!!! I feel like I am finally starting to make sense of this little by little. A ton of reading and it's worth it :) very fun.

Thanks a ton!!!!! This definitely fixed the issue as to why it was not searching. Thanks so much for your time!!! I'm so glad to know this. Now this will help me when I save channels in the future. You are a lifesaver!
