This morning, pretty clearly I heard James City County in Atlantic County NJ. Atlantic County NJ Fire 2 is the same output freq and PL as James City County VA Fire 1, except James City County is a duplex channel and Atlantic County is Simplex. About 200+ miles away (line of site).

While VHF-Hi doesn't carry as far as freqs below say 50 MHz, it will, with the proper conditions, carry fairly far.
Many years ago while living in Tucson, I recall hearing (and the police heard it too) another system on one of their primary dispatch channels. Distance was similar, though I forget exactly where the other system was. TPD was (and still is) in the 155 MHz band.
