So ever since I moved to queens it's been a hit or miss monioring this system. My bcd536hp shows full bars but misses so much traffic. I can't imagine this is from simulcast distortion since I'm pretty far away, approximately 15 miles away. However I have no issue monitoring Fort Lee and Bayonne from here.

Any advice?

Has it been this way for long? Maybe Jersey City has a site with a issue, I can pickup Jersey City much farther away than I can Bayonne. I loose Bayonne coverage and can normally hear Jersey City for miles past when I travel around.

My 536 has the same issues on a lot of systems as well as JC. NAS on JC I have no issues while side by side with the 536 the uniden misses transmissions especially in scan mode.

I had a problem with the NJSP 800 MHz system here in South Jersey. I finally was able to isolate the problem to 2 close cell phone towers that seem to be overloading the front end of my 536 HPs. I turned the internal attenuator on and since then I have had no problems even using an external antenna. Just a thought to try.

Tried it and no luck :(

Only until I moved from Brooklyn to Queens a year ago.

This comes up from time to time. I wasn't involved in the Jersey City system, but my impression is that the coverage was engineered for in-City coverage with antennas that beam signal into the areas required, and very minimally to the outer areas. Simulcast overlap can be controlled in the city, but outside, there could be a number of complex timing issues that could also cause phase cancellation. Containing signals is unusual for UHF, but is required for 700 MHz in the region. The old JCPD system was discrete repeaters on top of the former Jersey City Medical Center on Baldwin Av. The district repeaters were heard solidly for miles around.

I was under the impression it was some kind of simulcast distortion since full bars are showing but it could be number amount of factors.

It could be phase distortion from the uncontrolled overlaps or multipath from buildings and other urban structures. Thing is that it seems to work for them in the city vs. the signal going out everywhere.

Try turning your antenna away from JC maybe towards a building that might only reflect one signal. Simulcast or phase distortion is here to stay as radio systems are now more focused in providing coverage where they want it, as where it's supposed to be, and not outside that area.

My antenna which is outside my bedroom window is actually facing north towards the Bronx. I don't know how else to position other then moving it around a couple of inches. Using an antenna indoors barely gets a signal.

FWIW, I live 10 miles due west of Jersey City and I have no problem hearing them. I get their system at a full 5-bars and there is no distortion. My guess is that the OP has buildings or some other microscale source of interference.

You might try a Yagi. You'd be able to rotate that around to minimize whatever you're experiencing.
