Jones County Sheriff's Dept. was issued a new VHF license in April which appears to be for NXDN.

From the county commision meeting minutes:

May 4, 2010 Minutes Continued

Amend the agenda to add the following non-agenda items:

Visitor 2. Sheriff Butch Reece – Emergency Radios

2. Sheriff Butch Reece – Emergency Radio concerns. Sheriff Reece
and Major Barbara Burnette discussed E-911 equipment with the
Board. The county’s newest equipment is 12 years old. Technical
support and parts are no longer available. If the system goes down,
the county will lose its E-911 revenue and have to go through a
lengthy process to reinstate. The new equipment needed and
mandated to have by 2012 will cost approximately $567,000. A
grant has been applied for; however, the grant through Jim
Marshall’s office won’t be let until October 2010. There wasn’t a
consensus on where the funding would come from at this time;
funding will be researched further.

Motion:
Motion by Childs, second by Liston to approve the purchase of the

equipment.

Vote: Unanimously approved.

Oh Jesus, here we go again. And the grant won't pay for non-compliant P25 stuff, which sad to say NXDN is not.

So what does your E911 system have to do with your radio system? And what 2012 mandate is being referenced?

sounds like another slimy sales turd at work.

Found 2 earmark requests for Jones County Sheriff's Office on Jim Marshall's website:

Enhanced 911 ($242,659)
Emergency Response Communications Systems ($50,000)
"This project will establish an interoperable radio communication system for the Jones County Sheriff’s Office. This is a valuable use of taxpayer funds because it will improve the coordination between law enforcement and emergency/first responder personnel and enhance fundamental safety and operational services for the residents of Jones County."

NXDN? Interoperable?

NXDN and interoperability

Yep, just like the City of Canton and McDuffie County have done moving to NXDN. The Kenwood NXDN capable mobiles and portables will scan digital and analog channels at the same time, so if a Sheriff's Department's primary dispatch channel is digital the deputies can still monitor the MRD channel, State Band Car-to-Car and another other channels that are analog or digital. This allows interoperability between VHF System users to remain in place and is nothing like what has to happen if one changes to a different frequency band. NXDN makes migration to digital real easy too.

Oh and by the way, grant funding stipulations have been changed to allow for the purchase of non-P25 compliant radio communications equipment to meet the narrowband deadline.

Also, some agencies have elected to tell their city and county officials that December 31, 2012 is the deadline for narrowbanding instead of January 1, 2013, so that is probably where the 2012 time frame Jones County used came from. I know I personally set January 1, 2012 as my deadline to narrowband all of our VHF Systems to give me a year buffer to take care of any problems that may arise.

I'm personally glad to see Jones County do something instead of waiting to the last minute to do something like some are doing and hoping for an extension. I personally don't think there will be one, but you never know.

As well they should. If you say (anything), 2013, the only thing they'd hear is---2013. Dec 31st 2012 gets their attention, as in oh crap, next year???
