ASP Statewide

About a year or so ago, the ASP moved to the new 800Mhz P25 digital system called AWIN. Many County and local police have, or are in the process of moving to this same system.

A nice earthquake or whatever other natural disaster that can happen may totally disrupt statewide communications with everybody on a common digital system. Computers fail, power fails (for extended time) and a bunch of other situations that make this AWIN move a bit scary. But what's done, is done and the old VHF and UHF frequencies are a dying bread.

Thanks. I remember several years ago that the 44.620 was always busy. Even though I lived over here in Missouri; it was louder than the locals. I thought there might have been like a point to point channel to the HP from the counties like we have over here.

Jonesboro ASP had one of the last of the 1500 watt bases, although they didn't run the power full tilt. They did run it over 1 KW. You could hear them over almost all of Arkansas most of the time, except for a few hours during the daytime. Shoot, in Jonesboro, you could hear the exciter alone all over town. The exciter would stay keyed a short time after the final dropped out.

ASP started phasing out low band in the early 90's with the switch to the 800 MHz trunked system. By 1995, only a few cars still had low band radios and most of the bases were already pulled out. All low band equipment was long gone before the switch was made to AWIN.

The prison system picked up ASP's old low band frequencies, but they are in the process of building a UHF system. I haven't heard if the prison will totally phase out their low band or not.
