@kmartin Just wanted to say that you had a good and logical thought that spurred an interesting discussion. The collective knowledge on this forum is beyond impressive. A scanner designed by RR members would be interesting to see, but sadly, extremely unlikely.
But seriously , if you took a handful of the experts on this site and put them together in one room with guys that have the know how to build a single prototype just think about it. It would probably be some sort of super scanner built for serious scanner buffs by serious scanner buffs

and then we would have a new thread

Whistler is still getting back on its feet, so its pretty much Uniden at this point. That is not counting the cheap CCR radios and the uber expensive offerings from AOR, Icom, etc.

Since its wandering minds time this morning, what if:

Motorola presented a scanner radio with 5,000 channels all modes and included the big E?? The purchase price includes a security check, too.
Selling it for (theoretically) $8500.00 ???

Would we purchase one?

I wouldn't. Might make sense for a media outlet, though, since they could monetize it and write off the cost through depreciation expense.

Me personally I think Uniden and others might ponder these two suggestions:

1. A scanner that can go in the dash. Replaces the car radio. Has AM/FM, a usb stick, etc. Does everything a car radio does when the squelch isn't open on the scanner side.
Nice idea--for the 1990's when most cars still had standardized (DIN) radio slots on the dashboard. Today's vehicles have the "infotainment system" integrated into the cockpit layout and vehicle operation--there's no standard, let alone consistency, from model to model or manufacturer to manufacturer.

Just trying to find a place to add a scanner or radio in a modern vehicle is an exercise in contortion and frustration.

As a sidebar to this thread, the thread in the Uniden forums re: developing the Scannermaster RH-200 remote display for the SDS200 is very illustrative of the complexities in bringing a new product to the market. And, this is a remote display for an existing model scanner, not an entirely new radio.

As a former aerospace RF engineer, I could do that at a consulting level, but the end result would be hardly better than a few scanners or receivers on the market now. You are also talking compeeting with some manufacturers like Uniden, AOR, and look what they spent getting to this point. Do you have about a mil and a half to start?

Or just wait for Hytera to steal the IP and sell one for 1/3 the price.
