I have a Uniden Home Patrol 1 and have it set to Fire/Law/Public Works

Does anyone know if Road Commission is on the same system as Fire and Law on the Michigan Public Safety System

I was a Firefighter in Kalkaska County but kinda lost touch with people I can get info from

They will be under the public works service type. If the NXDN info is correct, your HP1 won't hear them. You can hear MDOT on your HP1.

NXDN is a digital mode. I think it's originally from Kenwood.

The SDS scanners can pick it up if you buy the optional upgrade for approx $60.

Icom IC-R30 can receive it, so can Bluetail P25RX. There are more, I'm sure.

Makes sense since Grand Traverse Mobile does all the programming and towers and Radios in Kalkaska County

Plus there a Kenwood dealer

Regarding digital modes.

Public Safety is generally P25.

Commercial Radio is usually DMR, followed by NXDN.

Amateur Radio uses Fusion, DStar, DMR, P25 - no particular order. There are dozens of lesser known digital modes used by ham radio operators on HF.

Most road commission offices around this area use NXDN or DMR for their operations or data. I can only think of one or two counties north of Clare that don't use NXDN or DMR. Generally, road commission does not utilize the MPSCS.

Uniden BCD436 and 536 can receive NXDN with a paid upgrade, as well.

According to the Wiki page for Whistler scanners the TRX-1 (hand held) & TRX-2 (base) can receive NXDN with a free upgrade. I don't know if the upgrade is still available but you probably can find 1 of those radios used relatively cheap.
