I have had scanners/radios my entire life but the P25 stuff is new to me and still seems to be giving me a bit of a headache. I originally purchased a 436HP and after having issues with the Kenosha County Sheriffs office's simulcast system I returned it and picked up an SDS 100.

After hours of watching videos and browsing RR forums I have had good luck with the scanner on Lake and McHenry Counties in IL and Walworth and Racine Counties in WI but the Kenosha Sheriff is still just not right. Most of the time I am only getting half of conversations either at my home in Western Kenosha County or while I run around at work in Kenosha, Walworth and Racine counties. Most of my favorites lists were from the Sentinel database but I have added some channels manually via info from the FCC database but am still having issues. I have been toying with different antennas both at home and on the road, some do better than others but the Kenosha County Sheriff still seems to have WAY less traffic than every other county it borders and that makes no sense.

If anyone down here has the Sheriff's office nailed down I would love to hear how you are doing it. And on a side note I have another question. Are TGID's used in conventional P25 systems or only in trunked systems? It sounds like on a conventional system I should only need the control frequency/frequencies and NAC and I should be good to go but apparently not.

Over and out.

Conventional systems do not have sites or control channels. Conventional P25 frequencies (channels) do not have talkgroups. P25 trunked systems have talkgroups. The sheriff should be included as a frequency (channel) in a conventional system. Enter the frequency. Under Audio Option, it will show Search if new. Click on Search. Select Digital as the Audio Type. Select P25 NAC as Digital Option. Select NAC Code. Click on OK.

Thanks, but I do have the correct p25 freq and nac already. It has been working, just missing half of the conversation at times and again, there is way less traffic than neighboring counties with similar populations so I still feel like I'm missing something here.

P25 conventional frequencies can use encryption. It is possible that they are encrypting only part of the time. Sometimes, dispatch can be in the clear and mobiles encrypted or vice-versa. Listen to see if that is the case. Unfortunately, I am just a little too far away to listen myself.

That's partially true. If you get this figured out, look up One Frequency Trunk (OFT) programming. This method allows you to see the talkgroup being used, and radio ID's which you can text tag (Ex..TGID 1001..Dispatch-1/1002...Dispatch-2). It's an "optional programming method for Digital Conventional programming", but isn't required to listen.

I wouldn't tackle that, until you have the reception issue figured out.

Some past threads on this subject, others reporting similar problems as you. Have you tried parking on the frequency and not scanning?
Consensus seems to be fiddle with the radio settings and be close to a tower.

What do you have the modulation set to in the scanner for their channel? If you have it set to C4FM, then you’re going to have troubles hearing it while scanning as they are using LSM(CQPSK). If there’s an option to change the modulation of the P25 signal, then I suggest playing with that setting.

Well after some testing with a little 'try this-try that' it appears this is simply a location issue. I am at the far western edge of Kenosha County and the window in that room faces west. (So of course Walworth County comes in great :) ) I threw a cheapie magnetic mount vehicle antenna up on the roof and the difference was like night and day.

Will be picking up a discone in the near future. Thanks for the input everyone!
