To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I setting up a Kenwood NX 5700 radio with a single RF deck and dual heads. My fleet guys installed it and turned on the radio and it has a firmware mismatch. I am setting it up for the first time and going to install the firmware update to proceed through the process. The instructions tell me to set all the dip switches to the ON position on both the heads and the deck. I have done this and now neither of the heads turn on. However, it I set the dip switches back to the configuration given for the dual head and single deck, everything turns on fine. My question is do all the dip switches need to be set to the ON position to load the firmware update? If so, any ideas what might be going on with my radio that wont power up with all the dip switches set to the ON position?

As Evans said, just set the dip switches as final build out, connect it all together, add power and then reflash the whole setup from one of the heads.
