Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I've had my original version KFDTool for about 5 years now and it's performed flawlessly until yesterday. I use the Hirose-to-Hirose cable between the KFD and the accessory adapter. Now when I plug in the cable I get "Accy HW N/A" on all radios I try.

What in the KFDTool puts the APX into "Keyloading" and can I emulate that easily some way?

Due to me having to quit working I no longer have access to the tools I used to, plus I'm poor so I can't just buy a new cable or adapter so I'm looking for free/cheap troubleshooting ideas. And yes, I know the KFDTool isn't a MSI product, but I'm working with MSI radios so I'm asking here.

Solution
Correct. I just checked a KVL3000 and the sense and ground are zero ohms. As soon as I plug in the cable it put the APX in keyload. I assume you have hardware turned on in the codeplug as well.

Isnt it just a sense pin to ground?

On the HiRose connector:
3 - YEL (SENSE)
4 - BLK (GND)

on the schematic it shows SENSE and GND tied together.

So in theory shorting sense to ground on the adapter should put the radio into Keyloading?

I just got some APX7500s and an 8500 and had a similar problem. I found the 7500s were programmed for ADP and "secure operation" was set for software not hardware. As soon as I selected hardware it recognized my KDFtool but would time out when trying to keyload. I then found KEY1 which I was programming was for ADP and KEY2 was AES so when I programmed KEY2 with the KDFtool it worked fine.

On the 8500 it was lack of knowledge where I was trying to keyload from the remote control head and it wouldn't recognize anything. I found there is a keyloading jack on the brick and that worked fine.

Otherwise some keyloading adapters have a specific value resistor across two pins that tells the radio to go into keyloading mode.

Even though I have the ability to totally obliterate this thread and act like it never happened I won't. Yes, setting to hardware encryption fixed my issue.

I would have bet both of your lives the 3 radios I tried it on were set to HW, obviously I was wrong. But at least I admitted it and didn't make up some lame problem I found and blame that.

Carry on...

This is a really handy piece of knowledge to learn after you've installed 30 remote mount 8500's into Havis consoles with the keyloading port on the brick positioned in a way that you can't attach a keyload adapter.

Can't wait for our KVL7000 to arrive

My pain with that was 3 mobile CP's with 10 remote 7500/8500 each. They were originally keyloaded before the install, then the agency contracted the key update to us and I found out why. The PM quoted a couple of hours, it ended up being a 3 full day job.
