Aparently KHP is flying a Chopper in the Johnson County and Wyandotte County areas of KS on Friday and Saturday evenings now. I was wondering if anyone knows the frequencies they are using, because they aren't on the JoCo or WyCo trunks.

Yes, they are flying on the weekends. Currently they are still coming out of Topeka, but eventually they will be stationed here in KC. They are on the same Troop A frequencies (Johnson & Wyandotte towers, usually Johnson). Radio number is 700. Sometimes you'll here another number because someone is riding with them.

Don't hold your breath on moving a chopper permanently to KC. The helo folks are training up for a new $2 mil+ chopper coming this fall. All the chopper pilots live in Topeka- none in KC and I don't see them forcing them to move. The new bird will have 2 800 radios in it so they can monitor 2 systems at the same time (e.g. Wyandotte & Johnson) to jump calls. As it is now, they can only talk/monitor one of the counties- missing out on calls they may be on top of.

Another interesting thing- even though KHP is on the Johnson Co system the radios are not programmed to allow troopers to talk directly to any other agencies (unlike Wyandotte, Shawnee or Sedgwick). Troops can talk to Johnson Co dispatch but can't hear/talk to deputies or PD units on their talk groups. Anyone know whay Johnson Co is doing this different than everywhere else?

First paragraph -- yes, they are coming to KC. They are adding new pilots, therefore guys in KC can put in for it and STAY in KC.

Second paragraph -- My guess is because KC troopers are PLENTY busy on their own radios that they just find it easier to go through dispatch to relay messages.

NBW791-

Not sure where you are getting your KHP info but I would check your sources. 2 new pilot positions plus an aircraft LT bid in Topeka- none in KC. Must have minimum 1000 hours of pilot in command before you can run the KHP helo- this will take new pilots years to get. Even if they bid pilots in KC, trained them etc it would be years before they could be operational. Fact direct from Troop T.

Alright, I misunderstood that they were going to have bids for the KC area. They were talking about having the helo stationed here in KC though, right?? I'm guessing New Century.

The choppers only have fuel for about 2 hours of duty (+ a reserve). Instead of going back to Topeka each time, they are looking for a place to set down and fuel in KC- maybe a place to sit out bad weather etc...
