A consortium of 16 Wisconsin counties, including Forest County, has received $640,000 to create a plan to improve communication equipment and procedures of their respective law enforcement agencies.
Gov. Jim Doyle approved the award provided by the Wisconsin Office of Justice Assistance under the state Homeland Security Grant program.
Counties included in the grant are Oneida, Florence, Forest, Langlade, Vilas, Lincoln, Marathon, Marinette, Menominee, Oconto, Portage, Price, Shawano, Taylor, Wood and Waupaca.
Representatives of each county will comprise the Northeast Wisconsin Public Safety Communications (NEW-COM), a panel that will study ways the 500 area law enforcement and public safety organizations can communicate more effectively.
"A new communication plan is needed because the diverse terrain and forests hinder radio and mobile data communication," said Andy Faust, of the North Central Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission. The commission prepared the grant application.
The agencies are finding that they need more towers, special equipment and backup systems to provide adequate radio communication, he said.
