LCRA site issues or my antenna?

I got a sds100 for Christmas programmed it and AARRS is great but LCRA is very choppy and low quality sounding. I locked on to the cibolo site and heard barely anything from schertz and live oak, Selma, and UC but when I lock onto the live oak site LO, Selma, and UC become very clear and audible but schertz comes in pretty decent but still very spotty I have the stock antenna on my SDS and I’m questioning if that’s the problem or if it’s the site.

Site 119.19 Live Oak may still be a simulcast, but the SDS100 should have no issues there. It is the primary home site for the Randolph Metro cities (LO, UC, Schertz, Cibolo, Selma). Cibolo site is a primary site for Guadalupe County coverage along with Seguin, Hickory Forest and Kingsbury. Due to that, it's possible that the tower is oriented in a way that focuses more directionally than a traditional wide area circle. I don't know for sure, but since you are in Cibolo, it is also possible that you may be too close to the tower and need to attenuate the signal when locking onto that site.

Unrelated to the matter on AARRS do you know what the information channels for SAPD and BCSO are for I’ve heard units run license plates on them but a lot of times they use dispatch for running plates so what’s the point? And on BCSO what is JUD SERV it was quite active on New Year’s Eve I heard an officer chasing a suspect and one one officer reported shots fired, and have you ever heard BCSO use their air k9 channel?

Me myself and I very rarely tune into Bexar County or SA. I do know on EDACS they patched BCSO Central and Judicial Services together almost all the time. I haven't even tried since my SDS100 was stolen from my truck, its pointless to try and drive through SA and get anything on the 436 with the simulcast now. It worked great with EDACS ProVoice upgrade but those days are gone.

Also sometimes transmissions come in as short burst of static on AARRS why does this happen?

Probably encryption. The garbled audio does occasionally pass through briefly before the scanner recognizes ENC. Happened to mine sometimes. On other scanners that can’t handle simulcast, the same thing can happen to normal audio.

Yeah but this happened on a fire ground channel and maybe it was because some units were underground in a tunnel and we’re looking for a car wreck. And channels particularly in the west side sometimes sound like the person talking is on a helicopter.

If you are specifically asking about nexedge they moved off of that a few years ago. They are completely on LCRA 700 MHz in all of Guadalupe County. The VHF fire dispatch and paging supposedly remains active and patched to LCRA though I can’t receive it from my home, a few members here live in the area.

ok thanks for the update, yeah I hadn't scanned them in a good while, scence I've been really busy with projects around the house, and just the other day decide to turn on my scanner and hadn't heard a peep, and of course i have it on nexedge because that's what it was before, and so I decided to go ahead and load up database and look it up, and reprogram that channel, and remove the old channels out, then I started receiving. the other issue is Austin downtown central, I reprogramm that, but not sure on the encryption on p25, the only thing I can think of is p25 opensky, and if thats so than no scanner can pick that up unless dispatch puts a patch. I was just curious if my scanner can still pickup austin since they said on the news that austin is going encrypted on radios, since I work out here.

I had mine on just specifically nexedge digital, I don't remember what site it was on, but just recently I decided to load up the database and look it up and saw its now on lcra p25, so i removed the old site and loaded the new one and reprogrammed, now I'm able to listen in, I'm not sure when they switched over, like i said it's been awhile since I listen in. Now the other issue is Austin, I just added downtown central since I work out here and I hear sirens all day, but now with the news saying they moved over to encryption, the only thing I can think of is p25 OpenSky, I was able to pick up traffic in round mountain area, but that's not the area i wanted to listen to.

Guadalupe switched to the LCRA P25 system sometime last year. Austin PD should have gone secure already. According to the news stories, AFD and EMS are also supposed to be encrypted. However, one article mentioned the Austin Fire Chief saying their traffic wasn't. The only way to know is to program and see what shows up. Some people who are supposed to understand radio systems that work for a city or county government seem to have no clue about the details of their system when giving interviews.
