I drive a school bus and sometimes I’m in the bus for long layovers. The other day an idea came to me- I wonder if the overhead racks in the bus would work as a SW antenna? Or, I suppose I could put out a long wire by running it along the length of the bus. Anyone else ever tried this?

Running a wire through the bus will probably have poor results as the antenna would be surrounded by metal.

On the other hand, using a small jumper wire with alligator clips on each end would permit you to connect the antenna on your shortwave radio direct to the bare metal of the bus and use the whole damn thing as an antenna. It is isolated from ground by non-conductive tires, so it should work OK.
