Here in Northern California, the best anti-theft feature I could have on my vehicle are small signs on all sides reading "ATTENTION LAW ENFORCEMENT: IF YOU OBSERVE ANYONE OTHER THAN A WHITE MALE OPERATING THIS VEHICLE, PLEASE MAKE A FELONY-STOP ON IT" but I expect politically-correct people would vandalize the vehicle to punish me for perceived 'intolerance.'

Reminds me of the sign a friend had on his car... "Attention car thieves. Please carry ID when attempting to steal this car so your next of kin can be notified."

LoJack is typically only marketed in areas where the vehicle theft rate has passed some predetermined milestone. Coverage is typically nil outside of those areas.

Why would you need to track it if it won't go anywhere. A switch, a solenoid, and some wire, splice into your electric fuel pump wires and switch it off when you park it. An idea I've had for a while but never done it. Yes it could still be towed away but it takes out that drive away thief. Maybe put in a timer, if your car jacked they could get a block away before it dies, then again if there is a gun in your face, you wouldn't be thinking about a switch now would you. OK, I'll shut up now. Off topic, I know.

I did that many years ago with my first car. I wired the power window lock switch to the starter and fuel pump. You would have to push and hold the window lock button before the car would start.

No question, if you want your car back, get LoJack.
They claim they have coverage in 27 states. That leaves 23 states with no coverage whatsoever, and of the 27 they do, the question is just how much of the state?

You may get lucky and get your car back, but with such a limited network, I certainly would not count on it.

Why not just use the RR Maps and plug in the 173.0750 Mhz Frequency.
They would tell you the coverage

I have the 173.075 MHz frequency in my area. but I also know that the local law enforcement in this area of central NJ that have receive units turn the thing down or off. I'm told the date bursts are annoying.

Enjoying this thread by the way. Nice to discuss something else other than radio. I like the GPS technology being incorporated into the system. Sounds like it can offer better service and in more locations currently offered.

By the way how much is on star subscription costs?

They must have the older Trackers, as the newer ones
eliminated some of those issues.

OK, anyone know what activates LoJack? Once your car is stolen, and LoJack Co. activates your LoJack unit, how is this done? I was told long ago that FM broadcast radio stations transmit on a subcarrier and that is how the LoJack transmitter is activated - via FM radio. Other have metioned the activation command is sent on 173.075 to activate the LoJack device.

Thieves are getting smarter these days with LoJack. Apparently the theives are stealing cars, and letting them sit on a side street for a few days to a few weeks to see if the cops find it. Call it a cooling off period

The entry of your car, by POLICE ONLY [unlike On-Star] into NCIC
will start the activation process [automated from there] The filing of the theft report is the process.

My understanding is that once the vehicle info. is entered into NCIC, the State Police activate the 2.5 Watt mobile LoJack transceiver with a MSK data packet containing the identification number registered to the vehicle they are attempting to locate. In the case of the Chicagoland area, Cook and three collar counties each have a 300 Watt ERP transmitter. The transmitters are licensed to the State of Illinois WNVD283.

Lojack rents space on a tower near my town. My guess is they transmit a signal when requested to activate a transmitter. I have seen local police (Bethlehem, PA) with the four antennas on one of their police supervisor cars, so I am sure the service is available in my area.

In past years while monitoring I've copied the lo-jack data bursts on weekends, and informed our local pd,but ended up getting a pretty indifferent response! Sort of like, why do you care? I told them I'm only informing them for their CAD records because I know they're not equipped to deal with anti-theft technology newer than the "club"! This usually gets me hung up on,lol!
I feel that at least I did *something*,right? After all,it could have been my car.

I remember reading somewhere about a cheap vehicle tracker made from an unused cell phone. Even though the cell phone is not activated it still has 911 capabilities. You basically wire up a charger to your phone and hide it in the car. You write that phones ESN number down and give it to the police and they should be able to find the location. I believe there are some websites that claim to be able to locate cell phone positions with phone information. I am only going on my memory so this info might not be completely correct.
