So as I understand it BBC LW on 198 is set to close I heard Sept 26th (tenative) after 90 years , I have copied once or twice in past in the Winter but that does not leave too many left I realize nobody is into Longwave here but I always loved the challenge ( I am sure a few veteran DXers on RR are still into it?) but that just leaves to my mind 171 Morocco which is the strongest here alot, Algeria on 225 (which lately all I hear is a carrier??) Romania 152 , Poland 252 (if still on?) and of course Mongolia (which I never copied wish I had) on 164 , 209 Well I guess that is the end of a long long Longwave era...kinda sad !...73,s Marcy

It is sad that the longwave broadcast stations are leaving the airwaves. I'm glad that I was able to receive some a few years ago when I lived in Florida. Morocco would sometimes come in like a local, Algeria was pretty good, Monaco and Germany once each. Never heard Poland. As long as there are still LW broadcasts though I will be trying to receive them.

It's sad to see the BBC end broadcasting from Droitwich on LW. It's been coming for some time, and part of the delay may have had something to do with the Radio Teleswitching Service that is also broadcast on the 198 carrier. I believe they cut the power back some time ago. Originally, it was supposed to go off the air on June 30th of this year. There is also a petition to keep the station on the air, all detailed in this article

On the "Radio Discussions" website, there is a post from early August which states BBC 198 will shut down on September 26, 2026. Is this the correct date or is it 9/26/25?

After BBC 198 closes, I believe that leaves Romania (153), Morocco (171), Poland (225), Algeria (252), and two or three Mongolian stations.

My first exposure to longwave was Christmas 1987, when my parents gave me a Realistic DX-360. The owner's manual listed all of the longwave broadcasters on the air, and there were scores of them throughout the UK/Europe and Asia. All I was able to receive on the DX-360 were images of AM broadcast stations and some aviation beacons.

Despite being on the east coast, I was never able to positively confirm reception of any longwave broadcasters, only tentative logs of the BBC and Morocco.

LW can be tricky - breakthrough from MW stations and antennas are big issues. Loops and actives are your best bets unless you put up a big vertical with lots of grounding. MW breakthrough can be fixed with filters. Wire antennas on this range would be insanely long

It really really is something (especially on a winters night) how strong 171 Morocco can be and nice music at times when prop is just right...I never copied as mentioned Monaco or Germany but one that nobody mentioned that I have copied and strong was "Iceland" in the past off air now but it was one that was always in there if ? I remember it was on 189...I always enjoyed Longwave it,s like a "throwback feel to it" and nothing is easy ! on LW it,s a challenge I still chase beacons now and then and look for "Lowfers" I only have ever copied two one was "TH" I think in NJ and the other in CT. think in East Haven ??...Marcy

There were some nights a few years ago when Morroco was armchair copy and I was listening to the music with the 12 kHz filter on my receiver. I love nights like that!
When did Iceland drop longwave broadcasts? I never heard them but thankfully did receive Monaco and Germany a time or two.

That is a bummer. I used to take business trips to Bordeaux, France frequently, and in the rental car I would listen to BBC at 198 kHz.
