I am thinking about getting a new scanner but only looking at paying about $250. I mostly listen to Trunked Fire and Ems freq’s but also listen to fire in the 400 MHz range. I also listen to aircraft and military band. I am mostly an amateur but want a scanner that I could sort of grow with. Also what antenna would you recommend I will need to keep it indoors since I live in an apartment on the bottom floor. I am currently in Tucson, AZ but will be moving to Alameda County in about year. Thank you for the help.

Hi MAN99, welcome to RadioReference :)

Given the price range you have stated and your impending move to Alameda Co. , I would say look at either a Pro-160 from RadioShack or a BCT-15 from Uniden.
Look at getting a mag mount antenna that would normally be suited for a vehicle and place it on a file cabinet or such.

Unfortunately, neither of those will give you the digital capabilities that have been discussed in one of your other threads.

I noticed that. I've been looking at the 996XT its a bit on the expensive side for me. Would any one recommend this one?

I have a 996xt and love it :)
GRE/Radio Shack makes really good radios as well.
You just have to look over the feature list of each and see
which radio "fits you" best.

Uniden and GRE make great scanners and actually, several of Radio Shack's models over the years have been both built by Uniden and GRE.

With that said, you can look for "new" older Digital Scanners, such as a Radio Shack Pro-2096 (or the equivalent handheld, Pro-96). Still supports all the P25 modes, some people still have them new in the box or in near new condition. These radios, with the programming software which is dirt cheap, are capable of adapting easily to the rebanding of 800MHz going on. Extended frequencies may also be enabled on the scanner as well in the software.

The only problem is you won't find scanners brand new in a store, but perhaps on ebay.
