Hi,

I enjoy my stand alone scanners but my eyes are getting worse and it is hard to work with the dials and small text on the keys. Also, SDR's seem like a good deal for the price. I've performed some google searches, but am sure that I can get better advice here.

I'm looking for a good unit that I can control (over WIFI I assume) with my iPhone. Can somebody lead me in the right direction. Ideally, this would be something that I could just plug in and not have to connect to a PC, but I'm not sure if these exist.

Please advise.

Thanks

At this moment there's no such tool that I'm aware of and I've always wondered why some talented developer hasn't created a front-end remote control app for most modern scanners since they all tend to use the same control protocols/etc (meaning all the Uniden scanners work with their protocols for remote stuff and so on).

There's a market for such apps, definitely, maybe not a huge one but it can't be that hard to create a simple interface to allow for controlling the scanners remotely. Having said that since no modern scanners that I'm aware of allow for that kind of control using Wi-Fi then yes they'd have to be plugged into a computer of some kind with an application on the computer that can then be interfaced with the iPhone/Android/Windows Phone/etc app.

So, complicated yes, difficult probably not, with an opportunity to make a few bucks from it too - sounds like a win-win to me if the right developer came along.

Two routes:

1. Get an 8" Windows tablet that has a USB port and use that.

2. Use any home PC or laptop with a VNC server (and client on your iPhone). Your reception area will be limited to your home range, but you also won't lose coverage from your home range.

I use both methods, BTW.
