I'm looking for information on using this radio's PC/IF port to remotely control the radio's functions (like tune to a particular frequency) from a computer's serial port. I've read the document describing the P25 data dump for this radio.

If you have information (and aren't obligated by an NDA) please post here.

There is no option for computer control of the Pro96.

You won't get any replies with the information you seek, and I'll explain why (though I might be violating the terms of the "have information" part of your request):

As Rob stated, the PRO-96 cannot be "controlled" via the PC/IF port. You can only send/receive complete "images" of the scanner's programming. You cannot send discrete commands that tell the scanner to, for example, "tune to 866.2000 MHz", "scan bank 0", or "set bank 3, channel 16 to AM mode".

If there was such an interface, you can bet that at least one existing program would exploit it.

Hmm, it seems there ought to be a :) after this quote.

Just to be clear ... that's "like" as in "for example" or "including, but not limited to".

Thank's Don. That does indeed comply with the "have information" part of my request. As a side note, I'm very suprised there isn't at least a means to simulate key presses by sending commands (similar to some common Uniden commands sets). Just from a software testing perspective, I can't think of an easier way to automatically exercise the radio's programming with physically touching the keypad. Perhaps they use some special feature from an ICE pod or tricks using the JTAG port. *shrug* Oh, well.

Any bets on just who's program that might be? :D

Thanks ...

Rick,
The reason there isn't any way to simulate key presses is because the programs that are out there are basically simulating the "clone the configuration from another scanner" functionality. The hardware interfaces just aren't there for direct control.

Nah .. let's turn this around. The programs don't offer this for one of two reasons: either the radio does not support it or the programmers (myself included) don't have the necessary information.

Of course the hardware is there ... now as to whether the software inside the radio supports this (or could be upgraded to do so in the future) is the big question. I'm not optimistic and short of a definite answer from GRE, I'll have to do with the replies here.

Your master site
Turn the scanner off, then on 10 times within 1 second, press func three times, then turn it off and on again. There, now you have the super sekret computer control.

Happy 4th!

Before I bought my 796D I was looking closely at the GRE. That was the one function that is extremly handy. Maybe the base version(if they ever get it done) will have this.

Happy scanning!!

Rick, Is this information publicly available?

Don, I am interested in this aspect. Again is this information available? Is the 92/95/96 image fairly similar?

And a darn fine program it is.

Yes, cloning or using the software Win92/Win93/Win95/Win96.

The 96 is similar to the 93 and 95. The 92 is quite different.

AFAIK, the only one that's "publicly" documented is the 92 - Ken Plotkin and Bill Petrowsky figured it out quite some time ago, and Ken published it with his 92ware package. (In fact, I used Ken's documentation when I created Win92.)

There is a description for the 96, released by GRE and/or RadioShack, but I'm not aware of the "regular contact channels" one would use in order to get it.

Thanks Don!

What about making the radio talk? Is uploading/downloading image commands "Top Secret" as well? I found a copy of the Pro-96 dump command PDF file at strong signals, so I'm guessing the up/down commands may also be available???

I found a copy of SLURP and got a dump of an image. I can take out my ACME ever powerful decoder ring to decipher the image. ;)
